No matter how much my wanderlust pushes me to explore new places, I always make sure not to ignore my wellness. Over time, I’ve learned that taking care of myself while traveling is just as important as discovering new destinations. That’s why I’ve started carrying a few easy-to-pack and genuinely helpful self-care essentials wherever I go. I’m confident you’ll find them useful, too.

For me, self-care has become an empowering and essential practice. Something I try to include in my daily routine, no matter where I am. It refreshes my mind and allows me to fully appreciate and engage with each new adventure. However, I know how easy it is to let self-care routines slip when you’re caught up in the excitement of travel.

Here are the self-care essentials that have become my travel companions. They’ve helped me stay energized, centered, and ready to take on anything my journey brings.

Must Have Travel Self Care Essentials

1. Sanitizing and Disinfectant Wipes

Sanitizing wipes have become one of my must-have essentials whenever I travel, whether I’m catching a flight, hopping on a train, taking a bus, or driving myself.

I’ve experienced firsthand how unpredictable public toilets can be, especially in remote areas, picnic spots, or campsites, where there’s often a lack of proper sanitary wipes, soaps, or even tissues. In these situations, having sanitizing wipes in my bag has saved me more times than I can count, helping me stay protected from germs and making me feel a little more at ease.

I’ve also learned to be mindful about the type of wipes I use. I always go for alcohol-free wipes because I found that alcohol-based ones can really dry out my skin, something I want to avoid, since dry skin can be more susceptible to irritation or even viruses.

A couple of my personal favorites are Lysol Multi Surface Antibacterial Cleaning Wipes and CareTouch Hand Sanitizing Wipes. Both are super travel-friendly and have earned a permanent spot in my carry-on.

2. Comfortable Shoes

From city walking tours and trekking to hiking and strolling along beaches and promenades, I’ve found that my travel experiences are so much more enjoyable when my feet are comfortable.

Early on, I made the mistake of packing the wrong shoes and ended up with painful blisters that threatened to put a damper on my adventures.

Since then, I have always made it a point to pack comfortable shoes for exploring during the day and a pair of flip-flops for relaxing or giving my feet a break back at the hotel. This simple habit has saved me from uncomfortable shoe bites and made every trip much more enjoyable.

3. Meditation Apps

One thing I never forget while traveling is meditation. I’ve discovered that meditation not only refreshes my soul but also helps me see the world from a broader, more positive perspective. It’s become an essential part of my daily routine, grounding me and bringing a sense of calm even when I’m on the move. Admittedly, it can be easy to let meditation slip when I’m caught up in the excitement of travel, but I always feel the difference when I make time for it.

Thankfully, there are some fantastic apps like Headspace and Calm that have made it easier for me to meditate anywhere, anytime. I make sure to download them before my trips, and they’ve become vital self-care tools in my travel kit.

If you haven’t tried incorporating meditation into your travels, I highly recommend giving it a go; you won’t regret it.

4. Sleep Eye Mask

Getting a good night’s sleep is absolutely essential for me to keep my mind fresh and my energy levels high. Especially when I’m traveling and have a packed itinerary. I’ve learned that whether I’m on a long flight, taking an overnight train, battling jet lag, or just dealing with puffy eyes, having a comfortable sleep eye mask makes a world of difference.

A good eye mask that blocks out light helps me rest better, no matter where I am, ensuring I’m ready to make the most of every day on my trip.

4. Portable Water Filter

Staying hydrated is one of my top priorities when I travel, but I’ve learned that I can’t always count on finding packaged or bottled water everywhere I go. There have been times when I’ve had no choice but to consider drinking from taps or even natural water sources like riversides. To be prepared for situations like these, I never leave home without a portable water filter.

My favorite is the LifeStraw, which has saved me more than once on my adventures. Its filtration process gives me peace of mind, knowing the water I’m drinking is clean and safe, and I love that I’m not adding to plastic waste.

5. Dry Shampoo

Traveling always seems to take a toll on my hair, leaving it feeling dried out and weak after a few days on the road. That’s why I consider dry shampoo an absolute lifesaver, especially when I’m too exhausted for a proper wash or when I’m in a destination where wet washing isn’t practical, like cold climates or places without a hair dryer. Dry shampoo has helped me stretch out the time between washes and still feel fresh and confident.

One of my favorite discoveries is the All-Natural and Vegan Dry Shampoo from Handmade Heroes. It’s lightweight, easy to pack, and leaves my hair looking clean and picture-ready. If you haven’t tried dry shampoo while traveling, I highly recommend giving it a shot. It just might become your new best friend on the road.

6. Lip Balm

A good moisturizing lip balm is one of the most basic and important things one must carry while traveling. Chapped and dehydrated lips are very common traveling effects that occur no matter what the climatic condition of your destination is.

Moisturizing and hydrating lip balms will keep you smiling all the way long.

7. Face Sheet Mask

Face mask sheets have proven to be highly effective and hydrating, when it comes to quick remedies for having good facial skin. The ease to use them makes you capable of getting that evenly nourished glow and freshness on your face.

Do carry these face mask sheets with you on your travels, I bet they will become your BFFs too!

8. Noise Cancelling Headphones

Noise-cancelling headphones have been a game-changer for me, especially since I’m someone who gets easily distracted by noisy surroundings. Whether I’m on a flight, a train, a bus, or even just waiting in a busy terminal, these headphones help me tune out the chaos and enjoy my own little bubble of calm.

They’re not just great for listening to music or podcasts. I’ve found them incredibly effective for blocking out noise when I want to take a peaceful nap while traveling. Packing my noise-cancelling headphones is now non-negotiable for every trip. I can’t imagine traveling without them.

9. Facial Wipes

Facial wipes are a great way to effectively cleanse and exfoliate your face while you are on the go. Carrying them makes it easy to take care of facial skin that can be affected by the dust and pollution while you are traveling.

You can also use these travel friendly facial wipes to remove or before applying any facial make up.

10. Aloe and Rose Mist

Rose water is highly effective in hydrating and refreshing facial skin. You must include it in your daily skin care routine for the extra love your skin deserves. A small spray bottle is very easy to carry in your travel bag.

Make sure to spray some rose water mist before you go for a good night sleep.

I can’t recommend these wellness products enough. Each one has earned a permanent spot in my self-care essentials kit whenever I pack for a trip. Over time, they’ve truly made my travels more enjoyable, less stressful, and a lot more fun. If you add them to your routine, I’m confident you’ll notice the difference too. Happy travels!

Great list and I’m happy to say I use most of the things you have listed. I absolutely cannot live without wipes both for sanitizing or as make up removals. Gone are the days I lug cleansers and toners around in my luggage. I keep giving the sleeping eye mask a go but it never works and I have concluded that I don’t like the feeling of something on my face. Sunscreen is big on my list of things to carry too. I spend so much time outdoors when I travel that I have to make sure I am well covered daily.

Some of these are definitely essential for me. I always have wipes and disinfectant handwash. I don’t own any shoes that aren’t super comfortable! And the idea of essential oils is great, I usually pack a small travel candle if I have space. Toiletries including great moisturisers, are essential. I’ve not tried dried shampoo, but sounds like a great option for times when you can’t access a hot shower.

I couldn’t agree any more! I try to apply most of these tips during my travels but in everyday life as well. My most needed essential are the noise-cancelling headphones- I simply can’t live without them anymore 🙂

  • That’s a perfect list. I almost have it all except a few. I should really invest in a portable water filter.
One more thing that I’d add to this list is the FUD (Female Urinary Device). Its a blessing when the public toilets are a bit miserable!
