Here are some of the nicest coastal towns in Texas that are perfect for a relaxing getaway;
Best Coastal Towns in Texas
1. Galveston

Galveston is the quintessential beach town, and honestly, it’s one of my favorite spots on the Texas coast. On my visit, I was amazed by the sheer variety. There are 32 miles of gorgeous Texas Gulf Coast beaches to enjoy. I loved spending the day building sandcastles, playing in the ocean, or simply relaxing in the sand.
But Galveston Island offers so much more than just beaches. For a dose of fun and excitement, I always recommend checking out Galveston’s Historic Pleasure Pier amusement park and the Schlitterbahn Water Park; both are perfect for families. Moody Gardens is another must-see; it’s a destination in itself with its aquariums, rainforest, discovery museum, 3D and 4D theaters, and so much more.
If you’re a history buff like me, you’ll appreciate that Galveston boasts one of the largest and most well-preserved concentrations of Victorian architecture in the country. Touring the Moody Mansion is a personal highlight, and the island’s museums, including the historic railroad museum, are well worth a visit.
For shopping and great food, I went to Galveston Island’s historic shopping district, known as “The Strand.” It’s the perfect place to spend the day browsing unique shops and the evening enjoying a fantastic meal and cocktail. For a memorable date night, I recommend Hearsay on the Strand, while families will love Mama Theresa’s Flying Pizza.
No matter how you choose to spend your time, Galveston Island is a fantastic beach getaway. As the saying goes: “Happiness is a day at the beach.”

2. South Padre

South Padre Island is the southernmost Texas coastal town, and I have to say, it truly earns its nickname, “Tropical Texas.” It’s the only tropical island along the Texas Gulf Coast, and every time I visit, I’m reminded why it’s such a beloved destination. I think South Padre is a wonderful spot year-round, especially in the winter when the crowds thin out and the weather is still beautiful.
Some of my favorite things to do in South Padre Island include savoring miles of pristine beaches, indulging in fresh Gulf seafood, watching spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and building epic sandcastles. I love following the Sandcastle Trail, which features dozens of creative sand sculptures scattered throughout the island.
Most vacation rentals, condos, and hotels line the coastline, so catching a magnificent sunrise is always easy.
For unforgettable sunsets, simply cross the narrow island (it’s less than half a mile wide!) to Laguna Madre Bay. Even better, I highly recommend a sunset sailing trip with Osprey Cruises or Ka Motion Sailing Adventure.
After brushing the sand off my toes and slipping on my flip flops, I like to explore some of South Padre’s best attractions: Sea Turtle Inc., the Native Plant Center (which even has a peaceful labyrinth), Isla Blanca County Park with its Cristo de las Pescadores statue, and the South Padre Island Birding, Nature Center & Alligator Sanctuary, don’t miss the gator show!
My go-to places to eat in South Padre are F&B SPI, Yummies Bistro, The Painted Marlin Grille, Sea Ranch, and Wanna Wanna Beach Bar. No matter where I eat, I always try the daily special fresh catch, especially if it’s red snapper or grouper.

3. Port Aransas

Port Aransas is one of those charming small coastal towns on the Texas Gulf Coast that I keep coming back to. With a population of just over 5,000, it feels cozy and welcoming, but don’t let its size fool you. During the summer, the town comes alive with visitors eager to soak up the sun. One of the first things that caught my eye in Port Aransas was its colorful architecture and the seemingly endless stretches of public beaches.
I’ve found that the best time to visit Port Aransas is in early summer, specifically May and June, when the weather is warm but not too hot. If fishing is more your thing, late summer and early fall are ideal. Even in the winter, while it might be too chilly for a swim, I still love taking long walks on the beach and spotting unique birds along the shore.
Whenever I’m in Port Aransas, I make it a point to spend plenty of time at the beaches and always set aside a day for Mustang Island State Park, which is just a short drive away.
When it comes to food, I enjoyed meals at Virginia’s on the Bay, Cancun Mexican Restaurant, or Island Cafe. And for dessert, grabbing some ice cream at Island Scoop is a must.

4. Rockport

Rockport Beach stands out as one of my top picks among Texas beaches; it’s even ranked among the top 10 beaches in the state. This beautiful, mile-long stretch of sand sits on the peninsula near Rockport Harbor, facing Aransas Bay. I love that it’s just a three-hour drive from Houston, making it an easy weekend getaway for me.
What really makes Rockport Beach special is that it was the very first “Blue Wave Beach” in Texas, a designation given to beaches that go above and beyond for environmental cleanliness. It’s the cleanest beach I’ve visited in Texas, and I always appreciate the well-maintained facilities.
Whenever I’m here, I notice how family-friendly the atmosphere is. Kids are free to play and swim in the shallow, safe water, and the beach staff regularly checks the seawater for any issues. Pet lovers can bring their furry friends, too, though pets are only allowed in a designated area on one side of the beach.
Beyond the beach, there’s plenty to explore within a mile. I like to visit the Texas Maritime Museum or stop by the Rockport Art Center. For some shopping, Paradise House is the place for beach-themed clothing and home decor. At night, you can unwind at Poor Man’s Country Club and enjoy the local nightlife and tasty food.
For me, summer is the best time to visit Rockport Beach. I try to avoid weekends and holidays like the 4th of July, as it can get pretty crowded then.

5. Corpus Christi
Corpus Christi, known as the Sparkling City by the Sea, is one of my favorite Texas coastal towns to visit. The city has gorgeous beaches, a fascinating history, and plenty of kid-friendly attractions and nature trails; there’s truly something here for everyone. When I’m in Corpus Christi, I always make time for Malaquite Beach, which I think is the most pristine and scenic beach in town. It’s perfect for relaxing, taking long walks on the soft sand, and soaking in those breathtaking sea views. For more active days, I head to JP Luby Beach, which is ideal for surfing and kiteboarding.
One of my favorite sights in Corpus Christi is the picturesque Harbor Bridge, connecting the town to its port. This iconic landmark comes alive in the evening with beautiful lights. When I want to enjoy some culture, I visit the Art Museum of South Texas. It’s filled with incredible artwork and interactive exhibits that both adults and kids can enjoy. The Corpus Christi Museum of Science and History is another must-see, with its fascinating collections, hands-on activities, and historic artifacts.

6. Port Isabel

Just across the Laguna Madre from beautiful South Padre Island, I discovered the charming small town of Port Isabel, Texas. What really sets Port Isabel apart for me is its lighthouse, something you don’t often find in the Lone Star State. Climbing the 75 steps to the top of the Port Isabel Lighthouse is a must-do, and the views from up there are absolutely worth the effort.
Also, make time for the Pirate’s Landing Fishing Pier, the longest fishing pier in Texas! I loved taking a dolphin-spotting cruise, exploring the Port Isabel History Museum, and stopping by the South Padre Island Dolphin Research and Nature Center (even though the name can be confusing, it’s actually in Port Isabel).
With kids, a pirate cruise on the Black Dragon is always a hit. For delicious food, I can’t resist Joe’s Oyster Bar, Ceviche Ceviche, and Isabel’s Cafe. And no trip to Port Isabel feels complete without driving across the Queen Isabella Causeway to experience all the beaches and attractions of South Padre Island, just minutes away.

7. Surfside Beach
Surfside Beach is just 65 miles from Houston, and every time I need a picturesque break from city life, this is one of my favorite escapes. The town offers plenty of ways to enjoy the coast. Deep-sea fishing, surfing, jet skiing, swimming, and bird watching are just a few of my go-to activities here. I love spending hours lounging on the white sandy beaches, soaking up the sun. For fishing, I always recommend heading to Surfside Jetty Park, which is a favorite among locals and visitors alike.
Whenever I want to explore nature, I set out on the Bluewater Highway Trail, which has some truly beautiful paths winding through a variety of Texas flora and fauna. One of my must-do activities is visiting the Brazoria National Wildlife Refuge, where you can spot some of the 200+ bird species that call the area home. In the evenings, you can unwind at Sharkies On The Beach for live music and karaoke, or enjoy a hearty meal at Beach Front Deck Bar and Grill.
