Planning a romantic getaway in Wisconsin? Here’s my list of the best romantic getaways in Wisconsin to help you and your beloved find the perfect spot for your next escape.
Spending quality time away from the daily grind with the one you love is so important. And what better way to do that than by traveling together? Whether you’re celebrating a special occasion or simply want to honor your relationship, I’ve put together this personal collection of the best romantic getaways in Wisconsin. Each one has something unique to offer couples looking to reconnect and make lasting memories.
1. Cedarburg

This charming small town is surrounded by beautiful landscapes and scenic beauty at every turn. For couples seeking a serene retreat, Cedarburg offers a peaceful paradise where you can savor freshly made cheese and wine right in town.
Located just about 20 miles north of Milwaukee, Cedarburg feels like a step back into the 1800s with its old brick buildings, art galleries, and delightful shops. To kick off the perfect romantic escape, I love heading to Cedar Creek Winery. Sampling their wines, like cabernet sauvignon, pinot grigio, or their signature Cedarburg Spice, always sets the mood. Pair it with some fresh Mozzarella or Cheddar for a truly indulgent experience.
A stroll around the Cedarburg Grist Mill or across the Last Covered Bridge in Wisconsin is a must for those picture-perfect moments together.
If adventure is more your style, you can hike or cycle the Ozaukee Interurban Trail. It winds through hardwood farmlands, woodlands, and wetlands, and offers breathtaking views of the Milwaukee River and Lake Michigan, a romantic journey for nature-loving couples.
There are plenty of places to stay, too. Many offer customized packages for couples to make your trip extra memorable. Washington House Inn, right in the center of town, is one of my top recommendations for a romantic stay.
2. Bayfield

One of my favorite romantic getaways in Wisconsin is on the diverse south shore of Lake Superior, in the charming town of Bayfield. This small city, nestled on a hillside, is filled with opportunities for couples to explore, discover, and connect. You would love wandering through Bayfield’s locally owned shops, cozy restaurants, hip coffee spots, and its unique bookshop. Throughout the year, there are all kinds of cultural festivals celebrating music, wine, and delicious locally sourced food, perfect for creating new memories together.
In the summer, I always recommend renting a kayak to explore the stunning Apostle Islands. It honestly feels like you’ve left Wisconsin for a pristine seaside paradise. With so many islands to choose from, hopping on the ferry to Madeline Island is a must.
Whether you’re strolling through the charming village or hiking the trails of Big Bay State Park, the experience is magical. And don’t miss a night of dancing under the stars to live music at Tom’s Burned Down Cafe, one of Bayfield’s quirkiest spots.
For couples who love nature, a walk along the scenic Brownstone Trail is a must.
Even in winter, Bayfield’s romance never fades. The snow and ice transform the area, making it possible to explore the magical, frozen Apostle Island Sea Caves on foot or even drive across Lake Superior on the ice road. No matter the season, Bayfield holds a special place in my heart for romantic escapes.
Where do I love to stay in Bayfield? St. James Social is my top pick for a cozy and memorable visit.

3. Canoe Bay, Chetek

Canoe Bay is one of my absolute favorite romantic retreats for couples, tucked away in Chetek, Wisconsin. It’s perfectly situated, just two hours from the Twin Cities and about six hours from Chicago. Making it an easy escape for a special weekend or celebration.
The meals here are always a highlight for me, delicious dishes made with fresh ingredients, many straight from the on-site garden.
Canoe Bay consistently earns glowing reviews from travel magazines, and it’s the only Midwest property that’s a member of the prestigious Relais & Chateaux association. This adults-only, smoke-free, and pet-free haven lets you truly relax and immerse yourself in nature. During my stay here, I took full advantage of the walking trails, picnic spots, and all the perfect places for photos. You can also use the provided kayaks, canoes, or paddleboards on the lake.
Even when Wisconsin winters are bitterly cold, Canoe Bay is magical year-round. Whether you are cozying up by the fireplace, indulging in an in-room massage, or enjoying a whirlpool tub, the amenities add so much comfort and romance. While the wifi is limited and the stay is a bit of a splurge, I feel it’s worth it for the peaceful, luxurious experience. If you’re seeking a truly unforgettable getaway with your significant other, I can’t recommend Canoe Bay enough.

4. Milwaukee

Milwaukee, set on the western shore of Lake Michigan, is one of my favorite romantic getaways in the USA. Known as one of the country’s best river towns, Milwaukee is an ideal destination for couples thanks to its endless Riverwalks, popular breweries, unique Airbnbs perfect for two, romantic river cruises, and so much more. Every time I visit, I find something new to explore in the city.
I always recommend starting with the Historic Third Ward and Downtown Riverwalk. These are, in my opinion, some of the most romantic spots in Milwaukee. There’s nothing like taking a long riverside walk, stopping at lookout points, and savoring a meal at one of the many waterfront restaurants or pubs.
The Public Market in the Third Ward is a must for couples. I love exploring the stalls filled with local meats, cheeses, and wines. Café Benelux and Market are two of my personal favorites. And since Milwaukee is famous for its breweries, I always make time for a tour at Milwaukee Brewing Co. It’s a fun, affordable experience (just $10!), and the chance to taste a variety of brews from around the world is a highlight.
When it comes to a romantic place to stay, The Pfister Hotel is my top pick for its charm and luxury. Milwaukee truly has something for every couple looking for a romantic escape.

5. Door County

Located on a peninsula in northeastern Wisconsin, Door County is hands down one of my favorite romantic getaways in the state. The area is filled with charming little towns along Lake Michigan’s shoreline, and there’s no shortage of delightful date options for couples.
To feel like you have escaped to wine country, you can always plan a wine tasting at Stone’s Throw Winery. I loved grabbing an al fresco lunch on their terrace. It’s the perfect way to slow down and savor the day. Outdoor adventures abound, too. Peninsula State Park and Cave Point County Park are both favorites of mine for their stunning scenery and hiking trails, especially in the fall. And for a truly magical evening, Newport State Park is a certified dark sky park. I’ve spent unforgettable nights there stargazing with my partner.
In summer, I never miss Lautenbach’s orchards. Picking Door County cherries is such a sweet tradition, whether I’m snacking on them by the handful or bringing them home to bake into a pie together. Apple picking in the fall is just as fun and romantic.
To end a perfect day, I love taking a sunset stroll along the water, then heading to one of the area’s excellent restaurants. Wild Tomato Pizza and Not Licked Yet custard are two of my top picks.
For a truly cozy experience, I recommend staying in one of Door County’s many charming bed and breakfasts. My go-to? Westwood Shores Waterfront Resort. It’s a wonderful place to unwind with someone special.

6. Lake Geneva

Of all the romantic getaways in Wisconsin, a weekend in the charming resort city of Lake Geneva is one of my absolute favorites—for all seasons and all reasons. Whether I’m enjoying the snow-clad slopes for skiing in winter or basking in the sun on Lake Geneva’s beaches in summer, there are always plenty of activities for couples looking for a dreamy escape.
One of my must-do experiences is taking a leisurely stroll along the Riviera lakefront, soaking in those gorgeous views of the lake. Walking hand in hand with my partner on the picturesque Geneva Lake Shore Path is something I never get tired of.
The trail winds through breathtaking historic estates, mansions, and gardens, making every step feel truly special. For a touch of adventure, I love hiking in Big Foot Beach State Park, especially during sunset, when the scenery is extra magical. And when winter rolls around, Wilmot Mountain is my go-to spot for skiing and snow tubing.
Some of my most serene evenings have been spent cruising along Lake Geneva, just relaxing and taking in the sights. If I’m planning a romantic dinner, I always recommend making a reservation at Pier 290, Lake Geneva’s only lakefront restaurant. The atmosphere is perfect for a memorable date night.
As for where to stay, The Abbey Resort is my top choice for a cozy, romantic retreat. Lake Geneva truly offers something for every couple, no matter the season.
7. Madison

This lively capital city is wrapped in beautiful lakes and filled with trendy restaurants and bars, making it perfect for couples who love to mix outdoor adventures with great food and city vibes.
Whenever I’m in Madison, I’m drawn to the outdoor activities. With five lakes surrounding the city, I love hiking, biking, kayaking, and even stand-up paddleboarding with my partner. It’s such a fun way to experience the natural beauty Madison has to offer.
Downtown Madison is a must for any couple’s itinerary. I enjoy visiting the historic Wisconsin State Capitol, strolling through the UW-Madison campus, and exploring the city’s museums together. For something uniquely Wisconsin, I highly recommend doing a self-guided brewery bike tour. You can rent bikes downtown and easily ride to several local breweries for tastings and a bit of adventure.
Some of the city’s best restaurants and bars are downtown as well. For an especially romantic evening, I like to book a table at the AC Hotel’s Eno Vino Wine Bar and Bistro. It’s on the top floor, so we get incredible views of the Capitol building. Timing our reservation for sunset makes it even more special.
When I’m looking for a place to stay, The Edgewater is my top pick for a romantic retreat. Madison truly has everything you need for an unforgettable couples’ escape.

8. Wisconsin Dells

From high-end resorts to breathtaking state parks, Wisconsin Dells is one of my favorite spots for a romantic getaway.
One of my go-to ways to relax with my partner is booking a couple’s spa retreat at Sun Mountain Spa. The spa rooms offer beautiful views, a cozy fireplace, and luxurious treatments, pure bliss. For a soothing end to the day, we love catching a sunset stroll along the scenic River Walk in downtown Wisconsin Dells.
If you’re anything like me and love the outdoors, Mirror Lake State Park is a must-visit. I enjoy exploring nature and hiking trails, soaking in the tranquil lake views, and sometimes renting a kayak or boat for a peaceful day on the water.
For something truly unique, don’t miss a ride on a vintage duck boat to explore the Lower Dells Glacier Park. This amphibious adventure lets you see ancient rock formations only accessible by water, and it’s always a highlight of my trips.
When it comes to where to stay, I wholeheartedly recommend Bakers Sunset Bay Resort for a romantic and memorable experience in Wisconsin Dells. Its location on the shore of Lake Delton, tucked away from the city’s hustle and bustle, gives it the perfect remote vibe for a much-needed retreat.
9. Baraboo

Baraboo is one of my go-to spots for a romantic and adventurous getaway with my partner, especially since it’s home to Wisconsin’s most popular state park, Devil’s Lake State Park. We love spending our days exploring the countless hiking trails, relaxing on the two sandy beaches, and soaking in the incredible views that make this park so special.
There’s no shortage of activities for us at Devil’s Lake. We’ve gone biking, rock climbing, bouldering, kayaking, boating, and fishing, and we always enjoy swimming, picnicking, and bird watching. Hiking a section of the Ice Age National Scenic Trail is a must for us; it’s truly one of the park’s highlights. Even in winter, we find ourselves coming back for skiing, sledding, and snowshoeing.
After a day full of adventure, nothing beats relaxing with a glass of wine at Baraboo Bluff Winery, taking in those fabulous panoramic hillside views.
When it comes to where to stay, I recommend the Best Western Baraboo Inn for a comfortable and convenient base during your romantic escape.
10. The Osthoff Resort, Elkhart Lake

Located right on the shore of Elkhart Lake, The Osthoff Resort is one of my top picks for a romantic getaway in Wisconsin. It’s no surprise that it’s earned a reputation as one of the best holiday spots in the state. The resort is packed with activities, offers luxurious accommodations, and is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, making it an ideal place to relax with someone special.
During my stay at The Osthoff, I loved having access to the private beach, pool areas, bars, and lakeside restaurants. Everything is designed with comfort and romance in mind, so it’s easy to unwind and focus on each other.
One of the absolute highlights for me is the Aspira Spa. Their wellness massages, especially the couples spa sessions, are truly outstanding. In fact, my experience at Aspira Spa was even better than the one I had at the famous Sundara Spa in Wisconsin Dells!
These are just some of my favorite romantic getaways in Wisconsin. I hope you find the perfect spot to create unforgettable memories with your loved one.
