I’ve always been captivated by Wisconsin, a midwestern state surrounded by two beautiful rivers and dotted with charming forests and sprawling farms. In winter, Wisconsin’s beauty is transformed as a blanket of snow covers the landscape, turning the greenery into a magical winter wonderland. The splendid scenery and twinkling lights never fail to leave me spellbound during this season.

While the state offers countless places to explore, I believe the very best of Wisconsin’s winter beauty can be found at a handful of special destinations. Below, I’ll share some of my favorite places to visit in Wisconsin in winter for a truly memorable and thrilling experience.

The Best Places to Explore in Wisconsin in Winter

1. Wisconsin Dells

When I think of absolutely fun places to visit in Wisconsin during winter, Wisconsin Dells is always at the top of my list. It’s one of my personal favorite snowy destinations, especially as someone who loves the thrill of winter sports. Whether it is snowmobiling, skiing, trekking, hiking, or snowshoeing, you will always find plenty of ways to enjoy the winter magic of Wisconsin Dells.

For an unforgettable ice skating experience, head over to the Lake Delton Ice Arena. While the arena is well-known for hosting hockey leagues, I love that they also offer public skating sessions every Sunday and Wednesday. For snowboarding or skiing, Christmas Mountain Village is my go-to spot, with plenty of opportunities to hit the slopes.

Of course, I can’t talk about Wisconsin Dells without mentioning its reputation as the Waterpark Capital of the World. There are so many incredible indoor water parks here, but I’m especially fond of the Wilderness Resort. It’s home to one of the best indoor water theme parks in the area, and I’ve enjoyed staying in their cozy cabins with fireplaces, as well as their condos and villas with whirlpool tubs. The resort also offers a golf course, spa, go-kart trail, activity club, and rope course, so there’s never a dull moment as a guest.

Winter in Wisconsin Dells isn’t complete without experiencing the city’s winter carnival. It’s a highlight for me, with plenty of local food, drinks, and a festive spirit that brings everyone together in the name of fun and sportsmanship.

2. Be charmed by the Elkhart Lake

Elkhart Lake in winter feels like you’ve stepped into a small town nestled inside a snow globe. The whole area transforms into a picturesque winter scene, and I love getting outside for classic activities like ice fishing and snowshoeing. There’s something truly peaceful about spending time on the frozen lake or trekking through the snowy landscape.

For some lively entertainment, spend time at the Osthoff Resort, where live music concerts keep the evenings warm and festive. I also can’t resist the thrill of sledding at the famous Road America race track, it’s always a highlight of my trip.

When the cold starts to set in, you can warm up at SwitchGear Brewing Co., where you can enjoy something tasty and comforting to chase away the winter chills. I always make a point to try a few of the local restaurants as well; as someone who loves good food, dining in Elkhart Lake is a real treat.

And on those especially chilly days, nothing beats unwinding with a hot spa day at Aspira Spa, letting the warmth and relaxation melt away the cold.

3. Garden Of Lights in Green Bay

One winter event in Wisconsin that I absolutely love is the Garden of Lights in Green Bay. During the day, the botanical garden is already stunning with its variety of flowers and plants, but when night falls, it transforms into a magical wonderland of colorful lights. I’m always amazed by the imaginative shapes and patterns created by the lights. It’s so much fun to try to guess the names of the flowers as the green lights change to blue, orange, red, and yellow.

For even more winter fun, I head to the Titletown District, which is the heart of winter activities in Green Bay. I enjoy ice skating and hill tubing here, and there are always live musical shows, themed nights, and all sorts of exciting events happening throughout the season. When I need to warm up, I stop by the award-winning Badger State Brewing Company, where I can sample up to 24 different Wisconsin-brewed beers, a true treat for any beer lover.

For a memorable stay in Green Bay, I chose Lodge Kohler in the Titletown District. It has a fantastic spa, and I love that the rooms offer views of the legendary Lambeau Field. After a day of adventure, it’s the perfect place to relax and soak in the atmosphere.

And if I’m feeling lucky, I make my way to the Oneida Casino. Whether I’m trying my hand at blackjack or testing out the slot and video machines, it’s always an entertaining way to round out a winter trip to Green Bay.

4. Experience the Igloo Life at the Lakeside Igloo Adventure in Lake Lawn Resort

If you’re looking to do something both crazy and cozy this winter, I highly recommend heading to Lake Lawn Resort in Delavan. This stunning resort offers heated igloo setups overlooking the beautiful Lake Delavan, and I can’t think of a better way to enjoy the season. The food here is always delicious and truly hits the spot after a day out in the cold.

I find the Igloo Adventure perfect for chilling with friends, making memories with family, or even planning a romantic date night with my partner. Even though the igloos are heated, make sure to dress in layers to stay warm and comfortable throughout the experience.

Since the dining igloos are limited in number, make a reservation in advance to avoid missing out. It’s one winter experience in Wisconsin that I look forward to on my visit here.

5. Visit Door County

If you head to the easternmost part of Wisconsin, Door County will give you the pleasure of experiencing winter right on the seashore. This area is rich in history, with deep roots in both Native American and French heritage. Beyond the natural beauty, you’ll love the stories that Door County has to tell. For a peaceful winter stroll, you can explore the state parks or wander through the nature preserves, perfect for soaking in the quiet charm of the season.

If you’re seeking adventure, try cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, snowshoeing, or ice fishing. No matter your favorite drink, whether it’s coffee, wine, tea, or beer, Door County has plenty of cozy spots where you can warm up and relax.

For a true taste of the region, visit the Door Peninsula Winery and sample some of the best fruit-based wines Wisconsin has to offer.

6. Go on a Dog Sledding Spree at Bayfield

Bayfield, near Apostle Island, is famous for its neighboring ice caves, but you’ll find its quiet beauty is truly magical when winter arrives. When the snow queen spreads her magic here, the landscape transforms into something straight out of a fairytale. People from all over the world come to experience the Bayfield Winter Festival, but there’s so much more for you to do while you’re in the area.

For starters, you can have a blast cross-country skiing and tubing at Mt. Ashwabay. If you’re looking for more adventure, try snowshoeing, snowmobiling, or hiking. These activities are sure to fill your day with excitement. In winter, the water route that normally requires a ferry in the summer becomes rock solid from the cold and snow. This means you can actually walk, bike, snowmobile, or even drive a light vehicle across to Madeline Island without any obstacles.

If you’re a dog lover, you’ll have an unforgettable time at Wolfsong Adventures in Mushing. Not only can you race through the woods with a team of enthusiastic sled dogs, but you’ll also get the chance to befriend and feed them; they’ll love you for it!

7. Visit Lake Geneva

Lake Geneva is one of Wisconsin’s most famous vacation destinations, and you’ll quickly see why when you arrive. The quiet surroundings and high-end hospitality attract some of the wealthiest travelers, but you don’t have to be a millionaire to enjoy all that Lake Geneva has to offer.

Its location on a beautiful freshwater lake makes it a year-round favorite. Known as a resort town, Lake Geneva is perfect if you love golf courses, boat rentals, beach days, and kayaking.

The architecture and design of the resorts, hotels, and stay-ins here will leave you in awe. In winter, you can hit the slopes for skiing, snowboarding, and tubing at the mountain top of Grand Geneva Resort. If you’re looking for more winter fun, try cross-country skiing or ice skating; both are popular options in Lake Geneva.

Don’t miss out on other winter-friendly spots like Lake Geneva Zipline and Adventures, Big Foot Beach State Park, Linn Nature Park, and Kishwauketoe Nature Conservancy. Each spot offers its own unique way for you to get out, explore, and make the most of your winter getaway.

8. Have Fun at Spring Green

Spring Green in Wisconsin is like stepping into a living poem, especially in winter. When the lush greenery gets blanketed by fresh snow, you’ll feel the magic of the season all around you. This village in Sauk County is a haven for those who appreciate an artistic community vibe and quiet inspiration.

If you enjoy bird-watching, Tower Hill State Park is the perfect winter retreat. For more adventurous fun, head to Governor Dodge State Park, where you can go winter hiking, snowmobiling, skiing, snowshoeing, ice-fishing, and sledding.

Cross-country skiing enthusiasts will love Devil’s Lake State Park, which offers some of the best trails in the area. And of course, no winter getaway is complete without great food and drink; you’ll find plenty of options for wining and dining in Prairie du Sac and Sauk City.

One of the most unique experiences here is spotting wildlife against the sparkling white landscape, so don’t forget to bring your camera.

If you’re a wine lover, make sure to visit the Wollersheim Winery & Distillery in Prairie du Sac. It’s known for award-winning wines and stunning hillside views across the Wisconsin River, a true must-see on your trip.
