Jokulsarlon is one of the bucket list places not to be missed while travelling in Iceland, and hands down one of the most romantic places on the face of earth. This spectacular glacial lake is located within the Vatnajokull National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. From Hollywood to Bollywood to GOT, Jokulsarlon has been a popular filming location as well.

Jokulsarlon is one of the deepest lakes in Iceland, and it is said the ice glaciers were formed 1000 years ago. Today, Jokulsarlon is a destination that can be enjoyed any time of the year. In summer, one can enjoy the boat tours on the lagoon, a great way to see the icebergs up close. In winter, seals gather in huge numbers at the mouth of the lake, making a perfect opportunity for photography and wildlife enthusiasts.

It does get crowded during the day time, so we suggest visiting early, most ideal choice is enjoying the sunrise. There is a huge car park and toilet facility near the lake. A short walk will take you to Diamond Beach, where these icebergs melt down and float before joining the open sea.

Diamond Beach, officially called Jokulsarlon Beach, is a magical stop on the southern route of Ring Road in Iceland and is the perfect place for honeymoon photographs. Glacier pieces from the nearby icebergs drift in the water off of the beach and are carried to the shore by the tide. The beached diamond-ice pieces glisten on the contrasting volcanic black sand, waiting to be discovered by excited newlyweds. Scoop up some of these diamonds and present them to one another and take romantic selfies near the glacier pieces of all sizes. Is there a better way to start or end your day than with the sunrise or sunset in this beautiful setting?

There are no accommodations at Diamond Beach. There are a few hotels in Vik or Hofn that are a slight drive to the area. Staying in either of these two small towns will still allow a visit to Diamond Beach in time to catch the sun during the day or the northern lights at night.

6. Skogafoss

What is more romantic than sharing a kiss with your love while standing before a waterfall? A scene striking enough to garner screentime in Vikings and Thor: The Dark World surely measures up as a top romantic spot. What makes Skogafoss an automatic “10” though, is imagining yourself and your lover flying dragons only to steal a sacred kiss here like Daenerys Targaryen and Jon Snow in Game of Thrones.

At Skogafoss (“foss” means “waterfall” in Icelandic), you’ll find romance and splendor in an unspoiled habitat. Skogafoss is among the largest waterfalls in Iceland at 82 feet (25 metres) wide and with a drop of 200 feet (60 metres). The constant backspray created by the waterfall helps contribute to some gorgeous single and double rainbows on sunny days. This, of course, lends yet another layer of romance to this special place. Sporty couples will enjoy a hike or trek along the trail stemming from the eastern side of the waterfall and leading up to the pass of Fimmvorðuhals between the Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjoku glaciers.

One of the most magical Iceland honeymoon destinations is the stunning Fjadrargljufur Canyon. Located in South Iceland, the enormous canyon is about 100-meters deep, and nearly 2-kilometers in length. It is distinguished by its narrow, snake-like shape and rugged canyon walls. If you and your partner are into adventure and hiking, you’ll love the picturesque walk that travels along the side of the canyon. You’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the canyon below and surrounding cliffs, as well as the occasional waterfall.

You can also walk along the floor of the canyon as the water is quite low. Be prepared to get cold and wet as you’ll have to wade through some parts. Either way, you’re sure to love this stunning location, including its mossy trails, striking blue waters and gorgeous viewpoints. To make the most of it, pack a romantic picnic to enjoy along the way.

From the capital of Reykjavik to the canyon 255-kilometers, and will take you about 3 ½ hours. We recommend staying in Kirkjubæjarklaustur nearby, which is just 20-minutes away by car. The little village offers several cozy accommodation options.

While hornafjordur is relatively new to tourism, the large number of attractions place it on par with established tourist destinations. For instance, while things to do in Pheonix or other tourist destinations are exciting, they won’t outshine the magic of hornafjordur. It is a unique world of its own and a perfect Iceland honeymoon destination.

You can start by exploring Vatnajokull, a national park born from the natural combination of glacial ice, rivers, and volcano. You and your spouse can also get cozy in the geothermal baths of Glacial World, a place surrounded by mountains and a breathtaking view. Houses are also available for your stay.

If you’d like to see things on a grand scale, you’re in luck as Hofn Eagle Air provides air tours to tourists. You can agree that this will make for an exciting honeymoon experience. You should check out the glacier lagoon boat tour of Jokulsarlon. It is a chance for sightseeing, photography, and bonding with your partner.

9. Djupavogskorin Geothermal Pool

The hot tubs and swimming pools in Iceland are a romantic way to spend a few hours but many are busy. In the far east of Iceland between Djupivogur and Hofn is a secluded and special hot pool. Just off Road 1 there is a small parking area with a steaming hot spring. In the summer months cotton grass and harebells surround the spring and in the winter snow will be on the ground. A small path and boardwalk leads around a hill and hidden behind the hill is a hot tub. There is nothing here, just the hot tub and a clothes stand. However, year-round this warm hot pool has amazing views out across the Atlantic Ocean.

This small and free hot tub makes for a romantic soak during a honeymoon exploring Iceland. More than likely you will have it to yourself and there is nothing better than a soak under the northern lights or with snow on the ground.

10. Hveragerdi Thermal River

Hveragerdi - Iceland Honeymoon
Hveragerdi – Iceland Honeymoon

Hveragerdi thermal river is one of the best natural hot springs to visit in Iceland and it can be a great idea to visit them on the honey moon. Hot springs are only 40 minutes away from Reykjavík so the visit can be done as a day trip. To get there from the Hveragerdi village, you will need to hike for 3 km. The hike is really easy and at the same time, there is a lot to see. The landscape around Hveragerdi consist of thermal ponds – very hot, but also a view on a waterfall near by.

To make this even more romantic, it is possible to ask local horse farmers if they can get you on a tour and you would go to the hot springs on the horse back. Alternatively it is recommended to visit the hot springs in autumn, where you can jump in when it gets dark. Perhaps you will be able to see the northern lights from the thermal river.

The main reason why is Hveragerdi so good for honeymoon is mainly because it is not that popular location, even though it is beautiful, there isn’t too many people visiting it and it is never crowded. That way you can enjoy ambient and romantic atmosphere.
