1. Rotorua

Located on New Zealand’s North Island in the Pacific Rim of Fire, this geothermal hotspot offers epic romantic adventures. I love soaking in natural hot springs, watching shooting geysers erupt, strolling through the redwoods, and riding a gondola high above the treetops. For me, Rotorua is where romance and adventure come together effortlessly.

You could spend your entire vacation in Rotorua soaking in the hot springs, since there are so many. If you’re on a budget, check out Kuirau Park, a free public park where you can explore the geothermal activity in the mud pools and hot springs and soak your feet in the relaxing foot pools.

For a splurge, visit the Polynesian Spa, which features both public and private pools, as well as spa services, including massages and mud treatments.

For a different perspective of Rotorua, you have a few options to get a view up high. The Redwoods Treewalk is a cool series of suspended bridges that literally lets you walk among these giant trees.

To enjoy a romantic sunset, take the Skyline Gondola which soars above the city. All the natural beauty makes Rotorua a wonderful romantic destination on its own, and it’s also a great stop on a longer New Zealand North Island road trip if you have more time to explore while on your honeymoon.

2. Franz Josef Glacier

New Zealand has so many romantic destinations, but for me, Franz Josef is one of the most magical. This charming little town on the western coast of the South Island always captures my heart.

I love the sheer variety of activities to enjoy here, but the real highlight is exploring the incredible glaciers that line the coast. Every visit feels like a new adventure, making Franz Josef a truly unforgettable spot for romance.

Whenever I visit Franz Josef, I can choose to hike to the glacier or, for the ultimate adventure, go on a heli-hike. Taking a helicopter up and landing directly on the glacier is an experience I’ll never forget!

With a guide, I learned how to use crampons to walk safely on the ice, and then spent a couple of hours exploring the glacier’s stunning landscape. For an adventurous couple like us, it was truly the experience of a lifetime.

Another romantic opportunity in Franz Josef is the Franz Josef hot pools. This complex contains three main pools, or you can opt for a private pool for two people. It is the perfect romantic way to unwind after a day of hiking around the glacier. Franz Josef is also home to several restaurants and bars that are perfect for a romantic night out.

3. Mount Cook

Mount Cook, or Aoraki as it’s known in Maori, is the tallest mountain in New Zealand—and easily one of my favorite romantic destinations. Nestled within Mt Cook National Park, the journey there is just as memorable as the destination itself.

As I travel along Mt Cook Road, I’m constantly rewarded with breathtaking scenery: the brilliant blue waters of Lake Pukaki stretch out to my right, while the majestic Southern Alps rise before me. It’s one of the most spectacular drives I’ve ever experienced and a must for any New Zealand South Island itinerary.

There are so many easy day hikes within Mt Cook National Park, and if I’m feeling adventurous, there are even longer multi-day treks to explore. But what truly makes Mt Cook one of the most romantic places in New Zealand, in my experience, is the night skies. As the only international dark sky reserve in the southern hemisphere, the stargazing here is simply unmatched.

For a truly once in a lifetime experience, scenic flights are available over Mt Cook with snow landings. This is a fantastic way to truly appreciate the vastness and beauty of the mountains. Accommodation is available in Mt Cook village, located at the base of the mountain. While it is a small place and there are not too many options, all are very well rated and offer incredible mountain view rooms.

4. Queenstown

Queenstown is, in my opinion, the most beautiful and incredible town in New Zealand. Surrounded by stunning alps, sparkling lake shores, and lush greenery, Queenstown offers some of the most gorgeous landscapes I’ve ever explored. I also love how the town is considered the adventure capital of New Zealand—there’s always something exciting to try here!

The Skyline Gondola ride to Bob’s Peak to soak in the amazing panoramic views, then taking a luge down the hill, is one of the best things to do in Queenstown. Skydiving, Shotover jet boat riding, river rafting, heli-skiing, and bungee jumping are some more exciting adventure activities in Queenstown. It is truly an ideal honeymoon destination for an adventure-loving couple.

If you are not on the adventurous side, you could visit the nearby wineries, take a drive to the wonderful Glenorchy (Lord of the Rings tour) and Arrowtown, cruise along the scenic Lake Wakatipu, and visit the country farms. Also, do not forget to try the famous Fergburger.

5. Wanaka

Wanaka feels like a fairytale lake town to me. Just an hour from Queenstown, it’s a place where I can dive into adventure activities, enjoy cruising and skiing, take in breathtaking landscapes, and tour local vineyards.

The mesmerizing views and beauty of Wanaka make it one of the most romantic places I’ve visited in New Zealand. I’ll never forget seeing the majestic peaks from a helicopter ride that landed on one of the glaciers.

One of my favorite experiences is visiting Mou Waho Island on Lake Wanaka. Here, I’ve had the chance to spot diverse birdlife, including the little Weka—a rare bird that’s disappeared from the New Zealand mainland. And if I’m visiting in summer, I always make time for a trip to the local lavender farm; it’s truly a sight to behold.

6. Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island, just off the coast of Auckland, is my go-to escape when I need a break from the bustle of New Zealand’s largest city. Even though it’s only a quick 40-minute ferry ride away, it truly feels like another world. The green rolling hills are draped with vineyards producing some of New Zealand’s best wines, and the coast is dotted with heavenly beaches. For me, it’s the perfect place to relax and indulge in a romantic getaway.

Treat yourself to a meal in one of the world-class restaurants, pamper yourself with a spa treatment, or simply hop around the island’s vineyards and breweries to sample the fruits of the earth.

The ‘capital’ of the island, Oneroa, is where you’ll find the best shopping opportunities, with boutiques selling everything from local art to luxury fashion. There is no shortage of romantic hideaways, but among the best is The Boatshed, where you can have the privacy you desire in luxury surroundings while being treated to a special experience.

7. Coromandel

The soaring coastline of the Coromandel Peninsula always strikes me as one of the most romantic places I’ve ever visited. The stunning blue waters, interrupted only by dramatic rock formations, are reason enough to fall in love with this destination. But what I love most is that there’s so much more to do here beyond the breathtaking views!

Fancy a romantic spa day? Head to Hot Water Beach during low tide – the sand has hot water running beneath the surface. Dig a hole and create your own natural hot tub overlooking the ocean!

The other must-do activity in the Coromandel is the Hahei Beach to Cathedral Cove walk. The boardwalks and path are beautifully maintained with wonderful views over the coastline, and ends at the famous Cathedral Cove beach and rock formation.

As someone who loves the outdoors, I find the Coromandel Peninsula full of adventure. I can spend a day hiking The Pinnacles, scuba diving at Cathedral Cove Marine Reserve, or kayaking along the stunning coastline. Sometimes, I opt for a quiet evening watching the sunset from a romantic rainforest retreat or a cozy beachside hotel. And if I’m in the mood to stay active, I love hiking up Paku Hill for its breathtaking panoramic sunset views.

8. Milford Sound

Few destinations compare to the beauty and romance of Milford Sound, making it an easy choice for a honeymoon. I’m always amazed by its towering mountains, cascading waterfalls, and lush rainforest. As I explore this vast ocean inlet, surrounded by imposing peaks, I feel completely spoiled for choice. The seclusion, hours from the nearest town on the west coast of the South Island, only adds to the magic and romance.

For adventurous couples like us, the landscape offers so much to do—soaking in hot springs, enjoying gourmet food, or taking a scenic cruise through the sound. Every visit feels unforgettable.

9. Lake Tekapo

Tekapo is my idea of a perfect romantic escape on New Zealand’s South Island. Nestled in the Southern Alps, the town’s dazzling turquoise lake is, in my opinion, one of the prettiest in the country—and I love that there are plenty of luxury lakeside chalets to stay in.

If you are in Lake Tekapo between November to December, it is one of the best times to visit as you will get to see hundreds of beautiful colored lupins in full bloom on the coast of the lake.

For a small town, there’s so much to do in Lake Tekapo: I can wander along romantic lakeside walking routes or unwind in the soothing geothermal waters of the hot springs, which are especially magical when visited at night on a stargazing tour.

Lake Tekapo is a UNESCO Dark Sky Reserve, one of only two in the southern hemisphere, making it one of the best places in the world for stargazing. One of my favorite experiences here is relaxing on a floating hammock in the hot pools, gazing up at thousands of brilliant stars shining overhead.

10. Marlborough Sounds

The Marlborough Sounds is my idea of the ideal place to spend a honeymoon in New Zealand. This region offers some of the best coastal views I’ve ever seen, and I love how many different ways there are to enjoy them.

You can relax on a cruise, hit the hiking trails or do some incredibly scenic drives. Highlights include the drive out to French Pass and Bulwer, the Queen Charlotte Track (it’s a multiday hike but you can do a small section if you’re short on time) and staying at one of the luxury lodges scattered around the sounds.

Picton is the main town in the Marlborough Sounds and it’s an awesome place to base yourself. You can get there on a ferry from Wellington and it has all eating, drinking and sleeping options you’d expect from a popular tourist town.

If you prefer to rough it a bit there are heaps of camping grounds in the Marlborough Sounds, some of which have some amazing views. That’s what I love about this region: there’s a honeymoon experience to suit everyone, whether you’re after luxury or something a bit more rustic.
