I had such an amazing time in Holland. This was my first time here, and I instantly fell in love with the charm of this town. Holland is a picturesque lakeside destination in Michigan, inspired by the rich aura of Dutch heritage. The town is especially well known for hosting the delightful Tulip Time festival every spring, when vibrant tulips blanket the city in color.
I was lucky enough to have my college friend as my host and personal tour guide during my visit, which made the experience even more memorable. Beyond the famous festival, Holland offers a wide variety of activities and sights. There are several stunning beaches where you can enjoy water sports or simply relax along the beautiful shores of Lake Michigan.
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the 251-year-old, authentic Dutch windmill De Zwaan, which is the only one of its kind in the United States. Holland is the kind of place that’s perfect for a weekend getaway or even a longer trip as you explore Michigan.

I was amazed by the sea of vibrant colors that transformed the city into a floral wonderland. The festival isn’t just about the flowers; it also features lively traditional Dutch music and dance performances that truly bring Holland’s heritage to life.
What made it even more fun were the games, rides, food carts, and festive parades, all of which added to the joyful atmosphere. The Tulip Time festival is a heartfelt celebration of Dutch traditions and the beauty of spring, and it’s definitely one of the top reasons I recommend visiting Holland, Michigan.
2. Visit the Veldheer Tulip Gardens
The Veldheer Tulip Gardens is Holland’s only tulip farm and perennial garden, and it truly stands out as one of the most picturesque spots in town.
When I visited, I was amazed by the sight of over 6 million tulips in bloom, along with rare varieties of Dutch lilies, daffodils, crocuses, and hyacinths. Strolling along the walkways surrounded by vibrant colors and the sweet scent of flowers was an unforgettable experience.
What makes Veldheer extra special is that all the perennials and flowers are sourced from around the world, and you can even purchase bulbs to plant in your own home garden. For anyone visiting Holland, exploring the Veldheer Tulip Gardens is absolutely one of the best things to do.
3. Spend a delightful time at the Holland State Park
Holland State Park is home to some of the most picturesque beaches I’ve ever visited, with one stretching along Lake Michigan and the other on Lake Macatawa.
Spending a day here was truly one of the highlights of my trip to Holland. I loved soaking up the sunshine, walking on the soft sands, and swimming in the clear, refreshing waters. The sunsets over Lake Michigan are simply breathtaking and absolutely worth staying for.
For those who enjoy camping, the park offers two campground options: the wooded Lake Macatawa campground and the scenic beachside campground. Both provide a unique way to experience the beauty of the area overnight.
There’s plenty to do at the beaches, from playing volleyball and fishing to exploring hiking trails or climbing the stairway to the sand dunes. And after all the fun, I was glad to find a concession stand nearby where I could grab some tasty snacks and refreshments.

The Holland Harbor Lighthouse, affectionately known as the Big Red Lighthouse, is one of Holland’s most iconic and historical landmarks. Dating back to 1872, this vibrant red structure still serves as a functioning lighthouse today.
While it isn’t open for public tours, I found that the best views and the most memorable photos can be enjoyed from Holland State Park or along the lakeshore. Catching a glimpse of Big Red with the sun setting behind it was a highlight of my visit to Holland.

The Holland Princess is a charming Victorian-style paddlewheel boat cruise that offers a magical way to experience Holland. Cruising on the sparkling waters of Lake Macatawa and Lake Michigan, I was treated to breathtaking views of the lakeshore, iconic landmarks like the Big Red Lighthouse, and Holland’s scenic surroundings.
What made the cruise even more enjoyable were the fun activities on board. There’s a karaoke system for guests, a treasure hunt to keep kids entertained, and other engaging options. I loved relaxing on the deck, taking in the scenery, and indulging in a delicious lunch as we glided across the water.

Windmill Island is a beautiful 36-acre island that truly lets you experience a slice of Dutch heritage right in the United States. When I visited, I was captivated by the stunning, colorful flowers and the spectacular waterfront views of Lake Macatawa. The walking trails are perfect for a leisurely stroll as you soak in the charming and peaceful surroundings.
One of the highlights of Windmill Island is the authentic 251-year-old Dutch windmill, centrally located and still fully functional. It even produces stone-ground flour that you can buy.
7. Explore the Nelis Dutch Village
Nelis Dutch Village is a delightful celebration of Dutch heritage and traditions, making it one of the most fun and immersive attractions in Holland, Michigan. Originally started as a tulip farm in 1952, the village has transformed into a lively destination packed with activities for visitors of all ages.
I loved exploring the ancient Dutch-style architecture, wandering through the charming network of canals, and watching authentic Dutch dance performances. The village offers so many hands-on experiences from trying out wooden shoe making, waffle making, and cheese making demonstrations, to interacting with animals at the petting zoo.
For families and thrill-seekers, there’s plenty of excitement with zip lining, swings, and rides—including the windmill-themed Ferris wheel, which gives you a unique view of the whole village. After all the activities, I enjoyed relaxing in the cafe and pub, and browsing the shops for unique Dutch souvenirs.

8. Visit the Outdoor Discovery Center Macatawa Greenway
The Outdoor Discovery Center in Holland has been dedicated to preserving wildlife and the natural beauty of 1,200 acres for over 15 years. During my visit, I was impressed by the hands-on activities that make learning about wildlife and conservation both fun and memorable.
Each year, more than 70,000 people come here to get up close with nature through the center’s fascinating walking trails.
The Outdoor Discovery Center is home to a variety of habitats, including meadows, remnant dunes, upland and lowland hardwood forests, marshes, wetlands, and ponds. I loved wandering through these diverse landscapes and spotting wildlife along the way.
Some of the highlights for me were observing live birds at the DeWitt Birds of Prey Center, playing at the Eldean Family Play Park, and exploring the Imagination Forest and Fillmore Discovery Park.
If you visit during the snowy winter months, you can even borrow snowshoes for a small fee and experience the trails in a whole new way. For anyone who loves the outdoors, the Outdoor Discovery Center is a must-visit spot in Holland.
9. Wander through the Gorgeous Kollen Park and Heinz Waterfront Walkway
Located on the shores of Lake Macatawa, Kollen Park quickly became one of my favorite spots to unwind in Holland. This gorgeous recreational park offers plenty of amenities, a boat launch, picnic shelter with tables, a fun playground, and a boardwalk that’s perfect for fishing or simply enjoying the view. It’s less than a mile from downtown, so it’s really easy to reach when you want a relaxing break from exploring the city.
I loved strolling along the waterfront and taking in the peaceful scenery. While you’re at the park, don’t miss the Queretaro Fountain, a beautiful gift from Holland’s sister city, Queretaro, Mexico, and the Immigrant statue, which was gifted by the people of Drenthe in the Netherlands. Kollen Park is the ideal place to relax, have a picnic, or just soak up the natural beauty of Lake Macatawa.

The Holland Museum is a must-visit if you want to dive into the city’s rich heritage and history. I was fascinated by the museum’s collection of artifacts that vividly showcase the lifestyles of early Dutch settlers in Holland. Mid Range: The Hampton Inn is one of my favorite mid-range hotels in Holland. The rooms are spacious, comfortable, and elegantly designed, perfect for relaxing after a day of sightseeing.
Luxury: For a little extra indulgence, Courtyard By Marriott is an excellent choice. It offers an indoor swimming pool, fitness center, and beautifully styled rooms, some with picturesque balconies.
