When I first arrived in Grand Rapids, I was amazed by how much there was to do within the city itself. I never found myself bored. There really is something for everyone, regardless of age or interests. But after spending some time exploring Grand Rapids, I started to wonder what other experiences awaited just beyond the city limits.
That’s when I decided to broaden my horizons and check out some day trips from Grand Rapids.
Exploring the surrounding areas turned out to be one of the best decisions I made. I discovered a range of exciting destinations that offered a perfect escape, whether I was looking for a quiet retreat or a day packed with adventure.
Each trip gave me a new appreciation for the region and added even more highlights to my time in Michigan.
Here are some of my favorite day-trip options from Grand Rapids that I think are definitely worth your time.
Best Day Trips From Grand Rapids
1. Rockford
Distance From Grand Rapids: 14.9 miles (23.9 kms)
One of my favorite day trips from Grand Rapids was to Rockford, a beautiful city just about 22 minutes away. I immediately fell in love with its charming landscapes and found there was so much to do during my visit.
The Rogue River Nature Trail was the perfect way for me to see the area’s natural beauty. I made sure to stop by the Rockford Dam overlook; it’s a must-visit and offers one of the best views in the city.
During my time in Rockford, I treated myself to a tasting at Kayla Rae Cellars (getting a little tipsy was all part of the fun!), then explored the local history at the Rockford Area Historical Museum.
For a relaxing afternoon, I enjoyed wandering through Luton Park and Garden Club Park. And for more adventure, the Merrell Trail definitely delivered. It was the perfect way to end an action-packed day.
2. Lowell
Distance From Grand Rapids: 18.6 miles (30 kms)
Another memorable day trip I took from Grand Rapids was to Lowell, a quaint city just a 24-minute drive away. From the moment I arrived, I could feel the peaceful atmosphere. Lowell is the perfect spot for a quiet, scenic escape from the hustle and bustle of city life.
I started my visit at the city’s Historical Museum, which was a real treat for a history buff like me. After learning more about the area’s past, I headed over to the James C. Veen Observatory. Exploring the observatory was truly fascinating and added a unique twist to my trip.
As someone who loves the outdoors, I spent plenty of time at Fallasburg Park, wandering its trails and admiring the picturesque covered bridge.
It’s honestly one of the most beautiful parks I’ve seen in Michigan. Later, I wrapped up my day with a relaxing evening at Creekside Park and found time to enjoy local art and shopping along Fulton Street East.
3. Cedar Springs
Distance From Grand Rapids: 21 miles (34 kms)
Cedar Springs quickly became one of my favorite family-friendly day trips from Grand Rapids. Just a 24-minute drive away, the city is surrounded by natural beauty and has a vibrant cultural scene that immediately drew me in.
When I visited with my family, we started our adventure at Deer Tracks Junction, where we had a blast meeting some adorable four-legged friends. The kids especially loved it, and it was a highlight of our trip.
I made sure to stop by the Cedar Springs Historical Museum to learn about the city’s unique past. For outdoor fun, we spent time exploring the Rogue River State Game Area, which is truly a playground for nature lovers and a great place to meet fellow adventurers.
Ody Brook Nature Sanctuary was another gem, where I felt completely immersed in the magic of Mother Nature.
During my October visit, I was lucky enough to experience the Red Flannel Festival. The event was packed with arts and craft shops, delicious food stalls, car shows, a children’s parade, and even a beauty pageant.
Cedar Springs is a perfect spot for memorable family adventures and connecting with nature.
4. Grand Haven
Distance From Grand Rapids: 33.9 miles (54.5 kms)
Grand Haven truly feels like heaven on earth and is hands down my favorite day trip from Grand Rapids. I enjoyed the scenic landscapes, the crystal-clear water, and the long, sandy beaches. There are so many moments that take my breath away in this city.
The first thing I did was to head straight to the Grand Haven Lighthouse. Standing there, watching the waves crash and feeling the breeze, is a wonderful experience in itself.
In the evenings, I loved spending hours at the Grand Haven Musical Fountains and strolling along the Grand Haven Boardwalk. If you’re with someone special, these spots are especially romantic and incredibly picturesque.
Downtown Grand Haven is a treat too, with delicious food and plenty of shops to explore. Visit during the festive seasons, Winter Fest and Coast Guard Fest are events you won’t want to miss.
5. Saugatuck
Distance From Grand Rapids: 40 miles (64.3 kms)
Whenever I’m in Grand Rapids and feel the urge for a little adventure, Saugatuck is always my top choice. Just a 50-minute drive away, this town never fails to surprise me with its adrenaline-filled activities and stunning landscapes. Honestly, there’s so much to do in Saugatuck that a day never seems quite long enough.
Saugatuck Dunes State Park is usually my first stop. I love riding the sands and catching the breathtaking sunsets; it’s one of those places where nature truly steals the show. On sunny days, you can relax at Oval Beach, soaking up the sun and letting the sound of the waves calm your mind.
For a change of pace, I enjoyed exploring the Saugatuck Center for the Arts, the Douglas History Museum, and the J. Petter Galleries. Each offers a unique glimpse into the town’s rich arts and culture scene.

6. Muskegon
Distance From Grand Rapids: 41.3 miles (66.4 kms)
Muskegon is another fantastic day trip I’ve taken from Grand Rapids, just a quick 41-minute ride away. It’s home to the largest beach in West Michigan.
Spending an afternoon at Pere Marquette Park or by Muskegon Lake is always memorable and incredibly relaxing. The views are stunning, and the atmosphere is wonderfully laid-back. I also visited the USS Silverside Submarine Museum, where I learned some fascinating facts about US submarines and their adventures.
As the day winds down, Kruse Park became my go-to spot for beach play, picnic, and watching the sunset or twilight settle over the lake.
7. Lavender Labyrinth at the Cherry Point Farm
Distance From Grand Rapids: 76.7 miles (123.4 kms)
If you’re anything like me and can’t get enough of that sweet, French lavender scent, or you just find yourself captivated by the color that’s neither quite blue nor purple, then you’ll be amazed by the Lavender Labyrinth, just outside Grand Rapids. Right next door is the charming Cherry Point Farm.
The Lavender Labyrinth is privately owned, with gorgeous lavender plants arranged in the shape of a labyrinth that, from above, looks just like a flower.
I remember feeling absolutely mesmerized as I strolled through the garden, breathing in the sweet aroma all around me. It took me about an hour to wander the path and finally reach the center of the labyrinth, and every minute felt magical.
After soaking in the beauty of the lavender, I made my way over to the market. Enjoying the fresh harvest was a treat in itself, and I couldn’t resist checking out the little herb garden nearby.
The whole experience was truly unique, a perfect blend of nature, fragrance, and local charm.
8. Round Barn Winery

If you ever find yourself searching for the perfect bottle of wine to give as a holiday gift, let me share a tip that completely changed my approach: visit a winery in person. While I was in Grand Rapids, I took the time to explore Round Barn Winery, and it was an experience I’ll never forget.
What makes Round Barn truly special is that it’s not just a winery, but also a brewery and distillery all in one place. I didn’t have to go anywhere else; everything I wanted to learn and taste was right there.
Since Round Barn does everything under one roof, I got a real hands-on look at every step. I even had the chance to try my hand at squishing and juicing the fruit, and I loved checking out the fresh harvests.
The team shared their insider knowledge on which grapes make the best wines and which special bottles are aging in the cellar.
If you visit Round Barn during the holiday season, you’re in for an extra treat. The festive atmosphere makes the whole experience even more memorable.
9. Wellington Farm Park

Wellington Farm Park quickly became one of those places I couldn’t help but fall in love with. After visiting, I completely understood why so many people return again and again.
Walking through Wellington Farm Park, I was surrounded by animals and watched farmers go about their day just as they would have years ago. It truly felt like stepping into old America, with all its charm perfectly preserved.
I was fascinated by the herds of animals roaming the grounds and found myself mesmerized by the iron craftsmanship on display. Watching someone weave an old-fashioned broom or demonstrate the simple ways of farm life made me feel as though time had stood still.
Every moment at Wellington Farm Park was an experience in itself, a chance to slow down and appreciate a way of life that, while from the past, still has so much to teach us today.
10. Greenfield Village

Greenfield Village, also known as the Henry Ford Village, was truly a highlight of my Michigan adventures. From the Henry Ford Museum of American Innovation to the Experimental Vehicle Building and Lovett Hall, I found myself completely immersed in the world of Henry Ford and the spirit of American ingenuity.
I loved that the village offered options for everyone: if you don’t feel like walking, there are carts available to take you around the compound. My favorite moments included taking the guided tour, hopping on a train ride through the grounds, snapping photos at every turn, and learning new stories about the village’s history.
Exploring these Michigan day trips from Grand Rapids gave me some of the most enjoyable experiences I’ve had in the state.
