10 Wonderful Things to do in Zakopane in Winter

Every winter, I find myself captivated by Zakopane, as thousands of visitors flock here to soak in the beauty of its snow-clad hilly landscapes and indulge in fantastic winter activities.
The stunning surroundings, vibrant cultural scene, ideal skiing spots, rejuvenating thermal baths, snow-covered wooden huts, and the festive Christmas market are just some of the highlights that make Zakopane so special to me.
There is so much to treasure in this enchanting winter paradise, and I can easily agree that there is never a dull moment in this charming resort town of Poland.
So, whether you’re looking for ideas on wintry things to do, a laid-back vacation, or an adventurous getaway, I can assure you that Zakopane has it all. Here, I’ll share all the wonderful things to do in Zakopane during winter that have kept me entertained and enchanted every time I visit.

Things to do in Zakopane in Winter
1. Enjoy Skiing and Snowboarding in Bialka Tatrzanska
Nestled at the foot of the breathtaking Tatra Mountains, Zakopane has always given me wonderful opportunities to navigate its accessible ski slopes. One of my favorite skiing spots here, especially for beginners, intermediates, or families, is Bialka Tatrzanska.
This small village boasts 16 kilometers of ski runs, all well connected by a network of ski lifts. The scenic surroundings and alpine views make skiing in Bialka Tatrzanska even more delightful for me.For short breaks, you will find a range of restaurants and cafes too serving authentic Polish cuisine.
If you’re keen on learning to ski, Bialka Tatrzanska also offers many private ski schools, making it an ideal place to start your skiing journey, just like I did.
2. Take a Gondola Ride to Kasprowy Wierch
In case you are looking for more challenging ski runs, you must head to Kasprowy Wierch, one of the highest peaks of the Tatra Mountains. To reach there you will need to take a gondola ride from Kuznice. The ride itself is an amazing experience. The views of the snowy slopes, mountains and alpines are astounding.
Skiing in Zakopane is an incredible experience that I believe you shouldn’t miss if you visit in winter. Even if skiing isn’t your thing, I highly recommend going up to Kasprowy Wierch, if only for the breathtaking views and those winter postcard-worthy moments.
Whenever I visit, the scenery from Kasprowy Wierch never fails to amaze me, making it a must-see for any trip to Zakopane.
3. Relax and Soothe yourselves at a Thermal Spa
Thermal baths are absolutely heavenly during the winter months. I always find them perfect for soothing away any tiredness or aches after a day in the snow. Fortunately, Zakopane and its nearby areas offer several wonderful thermal baths to enjoy during winter.
My go-to spot in Zakopane is Aqua Park, where I can relax in geysers, saunas, Jacuzzis, massage zones, therapeutic pools, and thermal pools, all set in a pleasing environment. For me, indulging in a thermal bath is truly one of the most unmissable experiences in Zakopane during winter.
4. Go Ice Skating in Lodowisko Tatra Ice
One of the most fun activities in winter is spending some enjoyable time while ice skating on a dedicated ice rink. Whether you are with kids, companions or friends, ice skating is a great pursuit that keeps you active in an amusing way.
The best ice skating area in Zakopane is Tatra Ice. Its the largest and is located at the centre of Zakopane next to the Kruwpoki street. Ice skating rentals are easily available near the rink at a very nominal cost.
5. Take a Winter Sleigh Ride
Want to feel lost in Zakopane’s winter wonderland in a more dreamier way? You should go on a sleigh ride in the Tatra National Park. This activity is very popular and great way to see the snowy slopes, alpines and fascinating wintry landscapes. These sleigh rides are driven by professional coachmen. The trails of the sleigh rides take you through the picturesque Chocholowska valley.
You can choose to ride the during the daylight or after dusk. If you go on a sleigh ride after dusk, you can refuge at a bonfire too for some warmth. Sleigh ride providers also serve snacks and drinks that makes your rides even more fulfilling. This activity is one of the most memorable things to do in Zakopane in winter.
6. Explore the Gubalowka Hill
For amazing panoramic views of the town and the surrounding Tatra Mountains, a visit to the Gubalowka hill is a must do activity in Zakopane in winter. This peak is located at 1100 m above sea level.
In addition to enjoying the scenic beauty, you can indulge in many fun winter activities such as snowmobiling, skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing and sleigh rides. You will also find many souvenir stores, cafes and restaurants serving delicious regional cuisine at the Gubalowka hill.
The most convenient and quick way to reach the summit is by a funicular ride. This short funicular ride that operates from the centre of Zakopane (ahead of Krupowki street) ascends you to the Gubalowka peak.
7. Try Zip Lining at Adventure Park in Gubalowka
Plan a fun filled day at the Adventure Park in Gubalowka Hill. Go zip lining amongst the gorgeous views of the snow-clad Tatra Mountains and the surrounding greenness. Glide through the winter wonderland comfortable while being safely strapped on a zip line.
The adventure park is a gateway for you to many adrenaline fuelled outdoor activities. These include big swing jump, zorbing, wall climbing and more. There is a junior rope park too specially designed for kids. The Adventure Park is a perfect spot to spend a day filled with thrills and amusements in Zakopane in winter.
8. Wander through the Krupowki Street
Spend an evening at the lively and vibrant Krupowki Street. Its a must do in Zakopane. You will find the best shopping stores, eateries, cute cafes and bars at this pedestrian only street.
Christmas time makes this street more merrier with the decorations, carols, rides, wooden chalets and more. This time of the year transforms the Krupowki Street into a place right out of a gorgeous wintery galore, which can worthily be touted to be one of the best Christmas markets in Poland.
9. Take a Day Tour of Morskie Oko
If you are looking for an adventurous winter outing, Morskie Oko lake is the place for you. Morskie Oko is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. With pristine clear blue waters, surrounding hills, greenery and snow covered cottages, this place is no less than a stunning winter wonderland.
The lake freezes during the winter, which makes it possible for visitors to walk on it. If conditions are favourable, you can even skate on it.
To get to Morskie Oko, you will have to reach Palenica Białczańska by a bus from Zakopane. The journey is 30 minutes long. From Palenica Białczańska, you can either take a 2 hour long trekking route or ride the horse-drawn carriages.
10. Plan a cosy staycation at Polana Szymaszkowa Ski Resort
Polana Szymaszkowa ski resort features cosy lodging, hotsprings, incredible views, restaurants and easy access to ski lifts. It is also located very close to the centre of Zakopane.
