Christchurch is the largest city on New Zealand’s South Island, and I find its historical vibrancy, convenient scenic getaways, creative street art, and beautiful gardens make it a must-visit destination. For me, it’s the perfect base for incredible day trips to some of the South Island’s most gorgeous spots.
While Christchurch isn’t overly touristy, I’ve discovered plenty of enjoyable and adventurous activities to look forward to on any trip here.
Here are some of my favorite unmissable things to do in Christchurch.
1. Take the Historical Tram tour
Whenever I visit a new city as a tourist, I’m always on the lookout for the most convenient, fun, and easy way to explore all the major landmarks. In Christchurch, hopping on the historical tram tour in a vintage-style tram is one of my favorite ways to see the city.
The tram takes you to 17 different stops, covering all the unmissable and wonderful sights around Christchurch. On the ride, you will be entertained by fascinating stories and historic facts about the city, shared by a knowledgeable local guide right on board.

2. Visit the Canterbury Museum
Canterbury museum exhibits an extensive collection of significant objects that demonstrate the history of the Canterbury region from different perspectives. The extraordinary fossils, captivating tales, the Victorian museum, and the gallery dedicated to the work of Sir Julius Von Haast are just some of the highlights that make this museum spectacular.

3. Marvel on Christchurch’s skyline from a Gondola ride
One of my favorite ways to admire breathtaking bird’s-eye views of the Southern Alps, Christchurch city, Lake Ellesmere, and Banks Peninsula is to take the Gondola ride. The views are stunning and dramatic as they unfold while you are gliding up on the Gondola.
Once you reach the summit, you can have some snacks at the Red Rock Cafe and shop some souvenirs from The Shop at the Top. You can hike back down through the mountain tracks or ride the Gondola to descend back.
The Gondola ride is conveniently located about 15 minutes from Cathedral Square, with a shuttle service departing every 30 minutes, making it easy for visitors to reach this popular attraction.
4. Go Punting Along River Avon
Punting along the tranquil Avon River is one of the must-have experiences in Christchurch. This activity begins at the riverbanks near the Antigua Boat Sheds, where visitors board a handcrafted wooden flat-bottomed boat steered with a pole.
The boatman, dressed in traditional Edwardian costume, adds a charming touch to the journey. Punting along the Avon is also a wonderful way to admire the beautiful flora that is such an aesthetic part of Christchurch.

Home to the renowned Botanical Gardens, Hagley Park is a fantastic spot for nature lovers. Visitors can wander through various conservatories, including the Magnolia Garden, Central Rose Garden, Herbaceous Border, Blind Garden, and more. It’s easy to spend an hour or two admiring the fascinating beauty of these gardens.
6. Visit the International Antarctic Center
The International Antarctic Center is an award-winning tourist attraction in New Zealand, offering visitors a journey through a variety of incredible Antarctic-themed displays and experiences.
Highlights include a fun-filled Hagglund all-terrain vehicle ride, a snow park, encounters with Little Blue Penguins, a simulated cruise to Antarctica, and a husky zone where guests can meet and cuddle rescued husky dogs.

7. See the Cardboard Cathedral
Christchurch experienced a devastating earthquake in 2011 that severely damaged the city’s iconic Cathedral. In 2013, the Cardboard Cathedral was constructed as a temporary replacement.
This innovative structure was built using cardboard tubes, a polycarbonate roof, and colorful stained glass, making it an architectural wonder. The Cardboard Cathedral also serves as a memorial for those who lost their lives during the earthquake and stands as a symbol of hope, resilience, and strength for Christchurch.
After visiting, visitors can also explore the vibrant street art scattered throughout Cathedral Square, where the Cardboard Cathedral is located.
8. Venture to the impressive Castle Hill
Located between Christchurch and Arthur’s Pass, Castle Hill is one of the most astonishing natural wonders I’ve ever visited in New Zealand. I’m always amazed by the surreal rock formations scattered across the landscape—they even appeared in one of the Narnia movies!
Castle Hill holds deep significance in Maori culture and history, which adds to its allure for me. As someone who loves climbing, photography, and film, I find this spot absolutely world-class and unmissable on any New Zealand itinerary.
The drive from Christchurch to Castle Hill takes about an hour, and I usually hire a rental car or join a tour to get there.
9. Explore the Christchurch Adventure Park
Another must-do in Christchurch for me is visiting the Adventure Park. It’s an incredible place to enjoy thrilling outdoor activities like biking, ziplining, hiking along scenic trails, or taking a chairlift ride over some of the most fantastic views of the Pacific Ocean, the Southern Alps, and the Canterbury Plains.
The chairlift ride here is actually the longest in New Zealand, and I find it to be one of the most unforgettable experiences in Christchurch. The Christchurch Adventure Park is perfect whenever I want to spend time surrounded by scenic wonders while embracing a bit of adventure.

10. Enjoy Fine Dining Experience On A Vintage Tram
One of the most memorable things I’ve done in Christchurch is enjoying a fine dining experience on a vintage tram while taking in the city’s beautiful sights. The tramway restaurant offers a comfortably cozy setting, and I loved dining on a delicious four-course menu featuring a selection of innovative dishes.
A complimentary drink on arrival set the perfect tone for the evening. During the 2.5-hour ride, the tram takes you around all the main attractions, including the tranquil Avon River and the Botanical Gardens.
Since this experience is extremely popular, I would recommend you to book a reservation well in advance.
