California is an incredibly diverse state, offering a wide range of activities, landscapes, and experiences. As you prepare for your trip, you might be excited to explore everything the Golden State is known for: stunning beaches, majestic mountains, sparkling lakes, scenic trails, and an abundance of national parks.

One of my favorite things about California is its almost year-round sunshine. While most days are sunny, I know there can be a few rainy days in the winter. Thankfully, California winters are usually mild, but since temperatures can vary between the north and south, I always check the weather forecast before I start packing my essentials.

I’ve put together all the essentials for my California packing list below. This list includes the accessories, gadgets, clothing, and skin care items that I make sure to have with me whenever I visit the Golden State.

Travel Essentials for California

1. Sunscreen

Sun protection is always my top priority when packing for California. The days here are usually sunny, no matter the season, so I make sure to protect my skin from sunburn and the effects of UV rays. Whether I’m relaxing on the beautiful California Coast or enjoying outdoor adventures, I never forget to apply a high-SPF, moisturizing sunscreen.

Personally, I love using Sun Bum sunscreen; it’s water-resistant, reef-friendly, and perfect for all the sunny destinations California has to offer. I always pack it to keep my skin safe while making the most of my time outdoors.

2. Sun Hat

Another essential I never forget to pack for California is a sun hat with excellent UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) coverage. My go-to is the Lanzom sun hat. It offers UPF 50+ protection from the sun’s rays, looks stylish, feels comfortable, and is fully adjustable for the perfect fit. What I love most is how easily it folds up, so I can just pop it into my handbag whenever I’m on the move.

3. Sun Glasses

Summer or winter, California gets plenty of sunshine almost every day, so I always make sure to pack my sunglasses. I look for a pair that provides strong UV protection to keep my eyes safe. Personally, I love wearing Ray-Ban sunglasses. They’re stylish, reliable, and offer excellent protection from the sun’s rays. If you’re looking for a great pair, I definitely recommend checking them out.

4. Dry Bags

If I’m planning to spend time at the sandy beaches of California, I always make sure to pack a dry bag. It’s incredibly useful for storing my valuables while I enjoy water activities like kayaking, fishing, canyoning, or any other adventure near the water. A dry bag keeps all my essentials secure and watertight, so I don’t have to worry about anything getting wet.

My top pick is the Freegrace Dry Bag. It’s high quality and reliable, and I love that it comes as a set of three: a full-size dry bag, an IPX8 certified waterproof phone case, and a waterproof pouch. This set gives me peace of mind and keeps my belongings safe no matter where my California adventures take me.

5. Camera

There are so many breathtaking and beautiful places to see in California, and I always want to capture those special moments and stunning views. That’s why I never travel without my camera. I also pack a tripod to make it easy to take hands-free shots, especially when I want to be in the picture with family or friends.

If you’re searching for an impressive camera, I highly recommend the Sony alpha a6400. Its incredible picture quality and stabilization make it perfect for capturing all the amazing scenery and memories California has to offer.

6. Cross Body Bag

To stay hands-free while exploring the streets of California, I always pack a good crossbody bag. It’s incredibly convenient, looks stylish, and is perfect for strolls, street shopping, sightseeing, or dropping into a local café. I like to keep my keys, phone, wallet, a small water bottle, and any other minimalist essentials in my crossbody bag, so I’m ready for anything without feeling weighed down.

One of my favorite options is the Bagsmart crossbody bag. It comes with anti-theft features and an RFID-blocking design, which gives me extra peace of mind and makes it an ideal choice for stress-free outings around California.

7. Waterproof Phone Case

Whether I’m beach hopping or enjoying fun water activities in California, I always make sure to use a waterproof phone case. It’s a smart way to keep my phone protected from water, dust, and even snow. I really like the universal waterproof phone case from Joto. It keeps my phone safe no matter where I go.

What’s great is that I can still use my phone, take pictures, and shoot videos on the move, all while it stays securely protected inside the case. It’s a must-have accessory for any California adventure near the water.

8. Toiletry Bag

Organizing all my essential toiletries and medicines in a good toiletry bag is key to keeping things fuss-free and easily accessible while traveling. I personally love the toiletry bag from Bagsmart because it has separate compartments and pockets, making it easy to arrange everything in its proper place. The sturdy design also ensures that all my items stay secure and don’t get damaged along the way.

9. Filter Water Bottle

I always make it a priority to stay hydrated throughout my travels, and I like to do my part in reducing plastic waste at the same time. That’s why I pack a filter water bottle. It not only gives me access to safe, purified drinking water wherever I go, but it also saves me money. I can easily refill my bottle on the go and feel confident that I’m drinking clean water while being environmentally conscious.

10. Tote Bag

I always bring a foldable tote bag when traveling around California. They’re super useful for beach outings and shopping trips alike. Since most stores here don’t provide plastic bags and charge extra for eco-friendly paper bags, having my own tote bag comes in really handy, and it helps me save a little money too. Plus, it’s an easy way to make more environmentally friendly choices while I’m out and about.

Clothing, Shoes, & Accessories to Pack for California

11. Footwear- Sandals, Hike Boots & Flip Flops

If I’m planning to spend more time at the beaches or by the pool, I always pack a pair of flip-flops and some smarter sandals. I make sure to choose non-slip shoes with rubber soles for safety and comfort.

For trekking trails, I never forget a pair of supportive, waterproof hiking boots or shoes. They’re essential for protecting my feet and making it easier to move across uneven terrain.

When it comes to special occasions, city tours, or long walks, I find that dressy sandals and sneakers are flexible choices that keep me comfortable and looking stylish wherever I go.

California Summer Wardrobe

12. Summer Dresses

One of my favorite and most versatile clothing choices for California is a light, breezy, and comfortable summer dress. I love how I can wear a chic summer dress for almost any occasion. Whether I’m club hopping, going on a date night, heading to the beach, or exploring new sightseeing spots. It’s the perfect go-to outfit for staying stylish and comfortable throughout my trip.

13. Bottoms

Denim is definitely a staple in my California summer wardrobe. I love wearing cool pairs of denim shorts, they’re comfortable and perfect for staying cool while exploring the city.

Long, flowy skirts paired with chic tops are another favorite of mine for warmer weather; they keep me comfortable and stylish at the same time.

I also make sure to pack at least two pairs of jeans, since they add both comfort and versatility to my outfits throughout the trip.

14. Swimwear

With so many fabulous beaches in California, I always make sure to pack my swimwear. I choose comfortable options that I feel good in, and I never forget to bring a stylish cover-up like a kaftan or shirt for those perfect beach days. This way, I’m ready to enjoy the sun and surf at any moment.

California Winter Wardrobe

15. Layered Clothing

I always pack a few thin layers for California winters. Things like long-sleeved tees, sweatshirts, woolen tank tops, and lightweight sweaters. These are perfect for staying cozy, since the winters here are mild and rarely chilly.

I never bother with puffy or thick jackets, but I do bring a medium-weight jacket for breezy evenings or hikes. This way, I stay comfortable and prepared no matter where my adventures take me.

16. Warm Scarf, Gloves And Beanie

A cosy scarf, a decent pair of gloves, and a beanie should also be in your California packing list for winters.

17. Rain Coat and Rain boots

Since winter is the rainiest season in California, I always make sure to be prepared for rain showers, especially if I have hiking or biking on my itinerary. I pack a lightweight raincoat and a pair of anti-slip rain boots to keep myself dry and safe. This way, I can still enjoy my outdoor adventures without worrying about getting drenched in the rain.

Now you’re all set to have an amazing time in the Golden State! By following my essential California packing list, you can relax and enjoy your trip, knowing you haven’t missed a thing.
