Winter in San Francisco is a time that I absolutely adore. Honestly, I can never get enough of this city, especially when the Golden Gate is draped in moody winter clouds, and the winds have that unmistakable chill.
The colder months make San Francisco even more exciting. If you’re planning a winter visit, you’ll find plenty of enjoyable activities waiting for you. All you need to do is clear your calendar and get ready for an unforgettable trip.

1. See The Christmas Lights And Decorated Trees
Every year, Union Square Park hosts the most beautifully lit and decorated tree, and I never miss the chance to visit the park and soak up the holiday spirit. If you’re planning to be in San Francisco in December, get ready for the magical event at Civic Center Plaza.
The Christmas Lights and Tree Lighting Ceremonies at the Civic Center are a highlight for both locals and visitors, and I always look forward to them.
You might be drawn to the event for the dazzling light show or the gifts, but what makes it truly special is the sense of community. It’s one of those occasions where everyone comes together to celebrate the festive season. It’s not just a light show; there are multiple performances, and Santa himself hands out gifts to everyone.
Festivities kick off at 4 PM and wrap up at 7 PM on December 6th, 2023. The official tree lighting happens precisely at 5:15 PM. If you’re visiting with kids, you’re in luck; the first 400 children (up to 12 years old) receive a free toy. Honestly, I wish I could be that lucky too!
Pier 39 and Presidio are also fantastic spots to admire beautifully lit Christmas trees during the holidays.
2. Be amazed by the Zoo Lights at the San Francisco Zoo
The San Francisco Zoo is one of my favorite peaceful places in the city, home to animals and rare plants all year round. But during the winter, it transforms into a truly magical spot. The zoo comes alive with twinkling lights and festive decorations, making it an absolute must-visit during the holiday season.
What I love most is that it’s not just about seeing the animals; there’s so much more happening! You’ll find reindeer, Santa Claus, and a charming marketplace filled with delicious food and organic treats.
Sipping hot cocoa while exploring the stalls is a highlight for me, and I always end up finding unique, sustainable goods from local vendors (plus, it’s a great place to meet friendly locals).
The atmosphere is made even more special with live music and roaming carolers singing beautiful hymns all around the zoo grounds. It’s no surprise that both locals and visitors call the San Francisco Zoo a magical winter destination.
3. Spot the Gray Whale at the Bay Area
Every winter, I look forward to the incredible experience of watching gray whales migrate along the western coast. And San Francisco is one of the best places to do it. Although whales can be spotted here year-round, experts agree that the greatest variety and number of whales appear from December to May.
During this season, I’ve had the chance to see humpback whales, gray whales, sperm whales, orcas, and even blue whales.
Besides whales, I’ve also spotted sea lions, turtles, and dolphins while out on the water. One of my favorite ways to go whale watching is with San Francisco Whale Tours; they always make the experience memorable and informative.
4. Go for Wine Tastings at the Chronicle Wine Competition
When I visit San Francisco, I always remember that I’m traveling through the heart of California wine country. Vineyards and wineries seem to pop up everywhere agriculture is possible. If you’re like me and want to sample the region’s best wines without leaving the city, you’re in luck. San Francisco has just the spot.
The Chronicle Wine Competition is one of the largest wine competitions in the western United States. Each year, over 5,500 wines are submitted and judged by more than 52 experts who rate them using a variety of criteria.
If you love spending an evening with a glass of Pinot Noir or enjoy welcoming friends with a chilled rosé, this festival is made for you.

5. Witness the New Year’s Eve Firework Display
There’s something truly magical about counting down to the New Year with friends and watching the dark sky explode into yellow, green, blue, and sparkling lights as the clock strikes midnight. If you’re lucky enough to be in San Francisco for New Year’s Eve, you’re in for a memorable night.
Pier 39 is my top recommendation for catching the city’s spectacular fireworks display. But if you’re looking to drink, dine, and party before or after the show, San Francisco has no shortage of options.
Some of my favorite celebrations include Gatsby’s Party Cruise, MOANY at the Regency Ballroom, Deco and Decadence at Hawthorn, the International Ball at the W Hotel, and Fresh Start at the Midway SF.
6. Have fun at the Winter Festival at California’s Great America Park
If you are in San Francisco between November 25 and January 1, visit the WinterFest at California’s Great America Park. They boast a million holiday lights and festive decorations, but honestly, that’s just the beginning of what makes this event so special.
What I love most is the infectious enthusiasm from both visitors and organizers that fills the park. There are countless events, a bustling fair, live plays, plenty of music, and the irresistible aroma of delicious snacks from nearby vendors and eateries.
There truly is something for everyone at WinterFest, and I can promise you’ll have an unforgettable time if you go.
7. Attend a Concert
San Francisco is bursting with energy and music, so whenever I visit, I make sure to catch a concert or two to make my trip even more memorable. No matter when you visit during the winter, you’re bound to find your favorite musicians and bands performing somewhere in the city.
8. Go Ice skating at Justin Herman Plaza and Union Square
Even though San Francisco doesn’t have the snowy slopes you might find elsewhere, I always make time for some classic winter fun at the city’s ice-skating rinks. There’s just something magical about gliding across the ice, surrounded by festive lights and city energy.
Some of my favorite rinks include Union Square Ice Skating, Walnut Creek on Ice, Ice at the Veranda, The Great Dickens Christmas Fair Festival and Ice Rink, Five Palms Ice at the Claremont Club and Spa, Embarcadero Ice Skating, and Boardwalk Holiday Ice.
Depending on where I’m staying, I’ll pick the rink that’s most convenient. And honestly, you can’t go wrong with any of them!

If you love comedy as much as I do, spending a cozy winter evening at a show is a must in San Francisco. The city is packed with comedy clubs, and no matter when you visit, there’s always a lineup of hilarious performances to choose from.
Winter is the perfect season to catch both fresh faces and big names like Trevor Noah and Matt Rife at different venues across the city. I also recommend checking out local comedians; you might not recognize their names, but their acts often deliver some of the best laughs around. 10. Attend the Charles Dickens Christmas Fair
If you’re a literature nerd like I am, or if you’re simply craving an escape from the everyday hustle and bustle, the Charles Dickens Christmas Fair in San Francisco is the perfect winter getaway. Every year, I look forward to stepping into this magical world where books come alive, and the spirit of Dickens is celebrated by fans from all over.
He may have been an English novelist, but his stories are cherished around the globe, and this fair is one of my favorite ways to celebrate his legacy. The festivities take place over five consecutive weekends from Thanksgiving through Christmas, running from 10 am to 6 pm at the Historic Cow Palace. One of the highlights for me is dressing up in 19th-century attire and joining in the fun; it’s like being transported straight into a Dickens novel!
