Chania is a charming city on the northwest coast of Crete, Greece. This picturesque port town is famous for its 14th-century Venetian harbor, golden beaches, and well-preserved medieval architecture. I was captivated by the way Chania blends enchanting beaches, winding old town streets, and delicious Greek cuisine.
Set against the backdrop of Crete’s distant White Mountains, this waterfront town is not only breathtaking—there are also countless exciting things to do in Chania.

1. Visit the dreamy beaches surrounding Chania
Chania is home to some of the most stunning beaches in Greece. I was amazed by the long stretches of sand and the bright blue waters that seemed to dazzle in the sunlight.
If you prefer to stay close to the city, there are several charming local beaches just a short walk from the center of Chania. No matter where you choose to stay, you’ll find yourself never far from a truly beautiful beach.
If you’re feeling adventurous and want to discover some of Chania’s most breathtaking sights, I recommend heading out to the southwestern part of the region. Here, I found some of the dreamiest beaches in all of Crete—ranging from stretches of unique pink sand to shores lined with dramatic rock formations.
No matter your preference, you’re sure to find a spot that will truly take your breath away.

2. Explore the charming narrow streets of the Old Town
To really soak up Chania’s charm, history, and medieval architecture, I highly recommend taking a stroll through the Old Town. Wandering the narrow cobblestone streets felt like stepping into a fairytale, with vibrant vines and blooming flowers around every corner.
Exploring the Old Town quickly became one of my favorite things to do in Chania. Along the way, I discovered cozy restaurants, quirky local shops, and plenty of friendly stray cats that added to the city’s unique character.
3. Enjoy a waterfront dinner
One of my favorite parts of Chania was the enchanting harbor. The waterfront is lined with restaurants where I could enjoy a delicious meal while taking in stunning views of the Aegean Sea and the distant mountains.
While some of the waterfront restaurants can get a bit touristy, I found that wandering toward the edges of the harbor led me to quieter, more authentic spots to relax and soak up the atmosphere.
For the ultimate evening, I recommend grabbing a table at sunset; the views over the water and the glowing sky make for an unforgettable meal.
4. Take a day trip to Seitan Limania
One of the most adventurous things I did in Chania was venturing out to the hidden Seitan Limania beach. This secluded cove, with its striking turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs, feels like a secret paradise.
Getting there isn’t easy—the beach sits nestled between two steep sea cliffs, and the only way down is a rocky, challenging hike. I made sure to wear sturdy shoes, took my time, and was rewarded with an unforgettable experience at this breathtaking spot. If you love adventure, Seitan Limania is a must-visit.
The trek down to Seitan Limania is absolutely worth it—it truly feels like a remote paradise. I loved swimming in the tropical-colored water, watching cliff jumpers in action, and simply relaxing on the sand. One of the highlights was spotting the adorable mountain goats that roam the cliffs and occasionally wander down to the beach to say hello!
How to Get There: I recommend renting a car or taking a taxi from Chania. The drive takes about 30 minutes, making it an easy day trip if you’re looking for adventure.
5. Go Diving or Snorkeling
Since Chania sits right on the Aegean Sea, I found it to be an incredible place for scuba diving and snorkeling. There are plenty of diving centers and boats in town, many of which are perfect for beginners and offer attentive guidance.
If you’re interested in exploring Chania’s underwater paradise, I highly recommend booking a diving or snorkeling trip. There’s a fantastic range of options available—from deep and wall dives to night, reef, and cavern dives, as well as guided snorkeling tours. It’s a must for anyone wanting to experience Chania from a whole new perspective.

6. Take a day trip to Balos Lagoon
Balos Lagoon is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful places I visited in Chania. Exploring this bright blue paradise was an unforgettable experience, and I highly recommend adding it to your itinerary.
The boat ride out to the lagoon was a highlight in itself, offering stunning views of the sea and the surrounding mountains. An added bonus is that most Balos Lagoon boat tours also stop at Gramvousa Island, where I hiked up a large hill to enjoy panoramic vistas of the coastline. If you’re looking for breathtaking scenery and adventure, Balos Lagoon is a must-see.

7. Take a boat ride on the Aegean Sea
What better way to appreciate the beauty of Chania than by seeing it from the water? Taking a boat ride was one of my favorite experiences in the city. Not only do these tours provide stunning views of the coastline and cityscape, but the guides also share fascinating historical facts and local stories along the way.
For anyone who loves history and nature, a boat tour on the Aegean Sea is an absolute must while visiting Chania.
8. Explore the Venetian Harbor
Chania’s 14th-century Venetian harbor is, in my opinion, one of the most picturesque and captivating features of the city. Strolling along the harbor, I found a lively promenade lined with classic Greek restaurants, cozy cafes, local shops, and colorful boats bobbing in the water.
On the east side of the harbor, I was especially fascinated by the Mosque of the Janissaries—a historic landmark built in 1645 by the Ottoman Turks, making it the oldest Ottoman building in all of Crete. With its rich history and stunning scenery, exploring the Venetian harbor became one of my favorite simple pleasures in Chania.
9. Take a stroll along the Lighthouse
When I visited Chania, I knew I couldn’t miss seeing one of the oldest lighthouses in the world. While you can’t actually go inside the lighthouse, the walk along the pier is more than worth it.
This iconic Venetian lighthouse, built in the 14th century and standing 21 meters tall, is a striking sight from the harbor square—but for the full experience, I highly recommend strolling out along the pier. Walking up to the lighthouse gave me unique views of the town and the surrounding waters.
The peaceful and romantic atmosphere makes this a perfect activity for couples or anyone looking to soak in the charm of Chania.
10. Hike Samaria Gorge
Samaria Gorge National Park is one of the most stunning natural wonders I encountered in Crete. Hiking the Samaria Gorge was easily one of the most adventurous things I did during my time in Chania. This 16-kilometer (10-mile) trek takes you through a dramatic ravine nestled between the White Mountains, making it not only a breathtaking journey but also one of the longest canyon hikes in Europe.
The scenery, with its soaring cliffs and lush landscapes, made every step along the trail unforgettable.
