Gran Canaria has always felt like the ultimate island paradise to me. From the moment I first set foot on its golden beaches, I was captivated by the endless sunshine and the relaxed atmosphere that seems to wash over you as soon as you arrive.

What I love most is how the island caters to everyone; whether I’m traveling solo, with friends, or most recently, with my family, there’s always something special to discover.

In this article, I’d like to share my experience of visiting Gran Canaria as a family. I’ll walk you through the best things to do and see, based on what made our holiday truly unforgettable.

Family-Friendly Accommodation

Before diving into all the fun activities Gran Canaria has to offer, I want to briefly talk about accommodation, something that became especially important for us as a family with kids. Thankfully, Gran Canaria really delivers in this area. There are so many family-friendly hotels, resorts, and villas to choose from, each catering to different needs and preferences.

Personally, I found that staying in a villa was a game-changer for our family. The extra privacy, spacious rooms, and amenities like a private pool made our holiday so much more comfortable and enjoyable. Of course, if you prefer the buzz of the city or a more compact space, there are plenty of apartments and bungalows available to rent as well. No matter what your family needs, you’re sure to find the perfect place to stay on the island.

Let’s look at the vast selection of fun activities in Gran Canaria that are suitable for both adults and kids of all ages.

Child-Friendly Beaches

One thing that stood out to me during our family trip to Gran Canaria was the sheer beauty of the beaches, but I quickly realized that not every beach is ideal for families with kids. After some research and a bit of trial and error, we found that Playa de Maspalomas and Playa del Inglés were perfect for us.

Both offer wide stretches of soft sand and shallow waters, which made us feel comfortable letting our kids splash and play.

The presence of lifeguards and first-aid stations gave us extra peace of mind, so we could truly relax while watching the children enjoy the sea.

And if your family is into water sports, you’ll find plenty of options here as well, from paddle boarding to jet skiing. These beaches truly balance fun and safety, making them excellent choices for families.

Outdoor Adventures

If you or your teens love a bit of adrenaline, Gran Canaria is absolutely the place to be! During our trip, we discovered a whole world of adventurous outdoor activities. My personal highlight was watching the windsurfers at Pozo Izquierdo. It’s a famous spot, and even my first visit was an unforgettable experience. If you’re up for a different kind of thrill, you can also go quad biking through the island’s dramatic mountain landscapes.

What really put my mind at ease was seeing that so many activity operators cater to families. Many offer special packages that make these adventures both safe and memorable for everyone, so you can focus on having fun together without any worries.

Amusement And Water Parks

Amusement parks always bring out the kid in all of us, and during our time in Gran Canaria, we made sure to check out a few of the local favorites! Aqualand Maspalomas was a definite hit with my family.

It was the perfect way to cool off from the island heat, offering an impressive range of water slides and pools that everyone, kids and adults alike, could enjoy. We spent hours racing down slides and floating in the lazy river.

For a totally different vibe, we also visited Holiday World Maspalomas. The energy there was contagious, with everything from thrilling rides to classic bowling alleys.

What I appreciated most was how both parks were designed with families in mind. There were plenty of places to grab a bite, and the menus included lots of kid-friendly options, which made the whole experience that much easier and more enjoyable.

Natural Wonders

One of my favorite parts of our Gran Canaria trip was exploring the island’s incredible natural beauty. Palmitos Park stood out as a must-see for families. Walking through this lush, subtropical oasis, my children were fascinated by the variety of plants and absolutely loved the live bird shows. It was both educational and entertaining for all of us.

For a different kind of adventure, we spent an afternoon at the Cueva Pintada Museum and Archaeological Park. It was a unique chance to dive into Gran Canaria’s indigenous history and see ancient cave art up close.

Exploring the excavations together sparked so many questions from my kids and turned into a memorable learning experience for the whole family.

History and Culture

If you’re traveling with older kids who are curious about culture and history, Gran Canaria has plenty to offer. During our trip, we spent a morning at Museo Canario in Las Palmas.

Both my children and I found it fascinating to learn about the island’s past, from its ancient roots to modern times. The museum’s exhibits are engaging for all ages, making it a worthwhile stop for families.

For an even more hands-on experience, we visited Castillo de la Luz. Exploring this historic fort and its various exhibits brought local history to life in an interactive way that really captured my kids’ attention.

Reflecting on our holiday, I can confidently say that Gran Canaria is a fantastic destination for families. With its comfortable and secure accommodations, plus a huge variety of family-friendly attractions and activities, the island truly has everything you need for an unforgettable family adventure.
