It has everything I could have wished for as a traveler: breathtaking beaches, fascinating history, incredible food, and a unique blend of relaxation and excitement.
During my trip, I noticed that Cancun is split into two distinct areas. The older part of Cancun offered me a more traditional, local experience, while the newer side impressed me with its modern restaurants, luxurious hotels, upscale resorts, and energetic nightclubs.
To help you make the most out of your own adventure in this beautiful Mexican city, I’ve put together a 3-day Cancun itinerary packed with the wonders and highlights that made my visit unforgettable.
3 Days in Cancun
Day 1
Explore Chichen Itza
One of the first places I visited during my Cancun adventure was Chichen Itza. Standing there in front of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of the New Seven Wonders of the World, was truly awe-inspiring.
Chichen Itza is about 120 miles from the heart of Cancun. I took a well-organized tour, which made the whole experience seamless.
Walking among these incredible ruins, I was constantly amazed by how much I didn’t know about this rich and influential civilization.
The towering stone structures set against lush green landscapes and a bright blue sky made for some of the most Instagram-worthy photos I’ve ever taken.
Just a short distance from the main archaeological site, I discovered a stunning cenote, a natural, cave-like pool with a hole in the roof.
Sunbeams streamed through the opening, reflecting off the water and creating a mystical, almost divine atmosphere. I couldn’t resist taking a refreshing dip; it felt like a natural spa.
La Isla Shopping Village
After an action-packed day exploring Chichen Itza, I was definitely ready for something a bit more relaxed in the evening. That’s when I discovered La Isla Shopping Village, and it turned out to be the perfect spot to unwind and soak up a different side of Cancun.
Wandering through La Isla, I was amazed at the variety. There were big-name brands like Calvin Klein, Swarovski, Diesel, and Louis Vuitton, but what really caught my eye were the small local shops.
I loved browsing unique items handcrafted by talented local artisans. It was the ideal place to pick up a few souvenirs, some of which have become cherished pieces in my closet and reminders of my trip.
La Isla Shopping Village is open from 11 AM to 10 PM, so I had plenty of time to enjoy a leisurely stroll, do a little shopping, and grab a bite to eat. Wrapping up my first day here allowed me to recharge and get excited for more adventures ahead in Cancun.
Day 2
Sail off to Isla Mujeres
On my second day in Cancun, I craved a true escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and Isla Mujeres delivered exactly that. Just 13 kilometers from Cancun, this island felt like a world away. The moment I stepped off the ferry, I was greeted by the island’s soothing vibe and laid-back atmosphere, which instantly put me at ease.
Getting there was a breeze. I walked a few minutes from downtown Cancun to Gran Puerto Cancun in Puerto Juarez, where I caught a ferry that departs every 15 minutes from early morning until late at night.
Once on Isla Mujeres, I was spoiled for choice with activities. I went snorkeling in the crystal-clear waters, swam alongside vibrant marine life, and even got the chance to see dolphins gliding gracefully around the island.
The aura of Isla Mujeres was so captivating that I could see why many travelers choose to stay overnight. The island offers plenty of hotels and resorts to suit all tastes and budgets, and I seriously considered extending my stay to soak it all in.
What truly stood out to me was how relaxing and carefree everything felt. I met several people who told me they come to Cancun just to unwind on Isla Mujeres, and after experiencing it myself, I understood why they called it paradise.

After a relaxing day on the island, I found myself craving a lively night out, and Coco Bongo was the perfect answer.
Even though Cancun is full of nightclubs and lounges, Coco Bongo absolutely deserves a special mention in any itinerary. The place is massive, with vibrant, festive energy pulsing through every inch. I joined crowds of other travelers and locals, all ready to dance, sing along to the music, and let loose.
The performances were like nothing I’d seen before, think acrobatics, confetti showers, and carnival-like spectacles, all under one roof.
If you visit during the festive season, like New Year’s or Christmas, Coco Bongo takes the party atmosphere to a whole new level.
I pre-booked my Coco Bongo Nightclub Experience to avoid the lines and get the most out of my night. The memories I made there, dancing with new friends and soaking up the electric atmosphere, made it one of the highlights of my Cancun trip.
Day 3
The Ancient Ruins Of Coba
If you were as captivated by the Mayan culture as I was on my first day in Cancun, then visiting the Coba ruins is an absolute treat. Tucked away in the dense forests, the Coba ruins felt like a hidden world waiting to be discovered.
To reach the real treasure at Coba, I had to climb a series of steep stone steps up the main pyramid. I quickly realized that the pyramid of Coba is actually taller than Chichen Itza’s, so I made sure not to underestimate the climb.
It was a bit of a workout, but every step was worth it. Standing at the top, 142 feet above the ground, I was rewarded with absolutely breathtaking views of the endless green canopy and the bright blue sky stretching out in every direction.
The feeling of being surrounded by nature and ancient history at the same time was unforgettable, definitely one of the highlights of my trip.
The Ancient Ruins of Tulum
Tulum was the final piece of my Mayan adventure in Cancun, and it truly brought the entire experience together for me. After exploring the grandeur of Chichen Itza and climbing the secluded heights of Coba, visiting Tulum felt like completing a fascinating historical puzzle. The ancient ruins are perched dramatically on cliffs overlooking the turquoise Caribbean Sea, making Tulum not just rich in cultural heritage, but also one of the most picturesque archaeological sites I’ve ever visited.
As a history enthusiast, I loved wandering among the stone structures and imagining what life might have been like for the Mayans who once thrived here. Tulum’s ruins, though smaller than Chichen Itza or Coba, have their own unique charm and atmosphere, surrounded by remnants of that incredible civilization.
By the end of my visits, I felt like I had truly experienced the heart of the Mayan world. Connecting these three sites made for an unforgettable adventure, and I’d highly recommend it to anyone wanting to dive deep into the region’s rich past.
Playa del Carmen
After immersing myself in the ancient wonders of Tulum, I decided to venture 64 kilometers north to Playa del Carmen, a Caribbean-like city that’s a must on any Mexico itinerary. Playa del Carmen isn’t just about the shoreline; it’s also packed with adventure caves, amusement parks, and theme parks, making it a playground for all kinds of travelers.
My favorite part of the visit was strolling down 5th Avenue (Quinta Avenida), where I browsed unique shops and indulged in some truly mouthwatering street food. If you go, don’t miss out on trying Marquesita, a local dessert that quickly became my guilty pleasure. It’s a crispy crepe filled with Nutella and Edam cheese, and I guarantee you’ll be craving it long after your trip ends.
For those short on time, I found an incredible tour that covers Coba, Tulum, and Playa del Carmen all in one day. The convenience of hotel transfers, entrance fees, a cenote visit, and a buffet lunch included made it an easy and memorable way to see so much in a single day.

Where to stay for 3 Days in Cancun?
When I was trying to decide where to stay in Cancun, I quickly realized there were countless options from luxury resorts right on the beach to budget-friendly hotels in the heart of the city. To save you some time and help narrow down your choices, here are a few places I discovered that I think you’ll love, no matter your budget:
Budget (Up to $50): For travelers watching their wallet, Hotel Los Girasoles in downtown Cancun is a fantastic find. I found the rooms to be basic but clean, spacious, and very comfortable. Plus, the hotel offers free WiFi, free parking, a cozy coffee house, and a sunny terrace where I could relax after a day of sightseeing.
Mid Range ($50 – $100): Adhara Hacienda is another great option if you want something nice but still affordable. Located in downtown, it’s close to many popular attractions. I loved how elegantly decorated and roomy the spaces felt. The staff was helpful and super friendly throughout my stay.
Luxury ($100+): If you want to splurge and enjoy the full Cancun resort experience, Dreams Vista Cancun Golf & Spa Resort really lives up to its name. My room was beautiful, cozy, soundproof, and offered incredible sea views. The resort itself is all-inclusive and packed with amenities: a private beach, swimming pools, lush gardens, a spa and wellness center, excellent gym, kids’ play areas and clubs, a nightclub, gaming room, sports facilities, themed dinner nights, and multiple restaurants. It’s the perfect place to treat yourself.

How to Get Around in Cancun?
Getting around Cancun was much easier than I expected. I relied a lot on the city’s bus system, which runs frequently along Boulevard Kukulcan and through the Zona Hotelera. Hopping on a bus was my go-to for reaching shopping centers, beaches, and city attractions, affordable and convenient!
For shorter trips, I sometimes took a cab, which turned out to be a budget-friendly option as well. I learned pretty quickly to keep some Mexican pesos with me, as it made paying for rides much smoother and saved me time not having to worry about currency conversions on the spot.
What’s The Currency Used In Cancun?
During my travels in Cancun, I found that the local currency is the Mexican Peso. When I visited, 1 USD was roughly equal to 19.65 Pesos, but I always checked for the latest rate before exchanging money.
While I noticed that US dollars are accepted in many places, I highly recommend bringing Mexican Pesos with you. It helped me avoid unfavorable exchange rates and made everyday transactions smoother—especially at local shops and markets.
