I recently visited Tucson with my family and had the chance to explore this vibrant city with my kids. If you’re looking for ideas for keeping your little ones entertained, here are 11 of the most interesting and fun things to do in Tucson with kids.
Tucson is a beautiful city with diverse and dramatic landscapes. Surrounded by mountain ranges, it’s perfect for families who love outdoor adventures and scenic vacations. Whether you’re trying to escape the heat in Tucson or searching for kid-friendly outdoor activities, this city offers a plethora of family-friendly attractions.
We spent three days in Tucson after a recent trip to Phoenix (if you’re planning to visit Phoenix too, check out my post on Phoenix with kids!). From a miniature wonderland to kid-friendly recreational areas, we found so many ways to keep our kids entertained in Tucson. To help you plan your trip, I’ve narrowed down the most enjoyable and fun things to do in Tucson with kids, tried and tested by my own family.
Things to do in Tucson with kids
1. Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum
One of the highlights of our trip was the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum. This place truly deserves its reputation as a top family attraction in Tucson. What amazed us was how much there is to see and do all in one place. There are beautiful botanical gardens, a zoo, an aquarium, fascinating wildlife exhibits, replica caves, and even an art gallery!
We loved how interactive and engaging the museum was, especially for the kids. Walking along the pathways, we had the chance to get up close to a variety of animals living in their natural desert habitats. My kids were fascinated by the blooming cacti and wildflowers, and they loved exploring the replica caves.
It was such a wonderful way for them to learn about the desert ecosystem while actually experiencing it firsthand.
2. Sabino Canyon Recreation Area
Another memorable experience for our family was exploring the Sabino Canyon Recreation Area. Just about 10 miles north of downtown Tucson in the Coronado National Forest, Sabino Canyon is a fantastic spot for families who want to introduce their kids to the wonders of the desert.
We were impressed by the variety of nature trails here. Walking these paths, we caught glimpses of local wildlife and enjoyed the beauty of the desert flora. The kids especially loved the tram ride, which gave us a relaxing way to soak in the stunning views of the canyon without having to hike the whole way.
My kids are younger, so we stuck to the Upper Sabino Canyon Trail, which is stroller-friendly and perfect for babies or toddlers. Sabino Canyon offers something for every family, whether you’re up for a big hike or just a leisurely stroll.
3. Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures
One of the most memorable and unique experiences we had in Tucson was visiting the Mini Time Machine Museum of Miniatures. My kids were absolutely fascinated by the array of interactive and entertaining miniatures on display. The museum is like a magical journey through time. Each miniature tells a story, from historic scenes to enchanting fables and fairy tales.
As we wandered through the exhibits, we discovered hundreds of miniature houses and room boxes, each carefully crafted with incredible detail. The kids loved peering into these tiny worlds, imagining all sorts of adventures.
There are more than 500 different displays to explore, and each one seemed to spark a new story or question from my children. If you’re looking for some fun indoor activity to do with your family in Tucson, the Mini Time Machine Museum is a must-visit!
4. Children’s Museum Tucson
Another favorite stop for our family was the Children’s Museum Tucson. This place is perfect if you’re looking for an indoor activity to escape the heat, where kids can play and learn at the same time. My kids loved the interactive exhibits. Everything was designed to be hands-on, which kept them engaged and entertained for hours.
What I appreciated most was how every exhibit was both fun and educational. The museum does a fantastic job of blending play with learning, so my children were discovering new things without even realizing it!
We also spent time in the creative courtyard, where the museum hosts kid-focused workshops and activities. These workshops really encouraged my kids to use their imagination and try new things.
5. Reid Park Zoo
Our visit to Reid Park Zoo was an absolute hit with the kids. One of the highlights was feeding the giraffes. My little ones couldn’t stop talking about how exciting it was to get so close to these gentle giants!
The zoo is home to over 500 animals, and exploring the different zones gave us the chance to see elephants, zebras, rhinos, tigers, bears, flamingos, and so many more creatures up close.
I appreciated how the zoo is divided into four zones, each designed to mimic the animals’ natural habitats. This made our experience feel both educational and immersive. In addition to seeing the animals, the kids had a blast riding the mini train and the carousel. Both are must-dos if you’re visiting with young children.
While you can’t bring outside food into the zoo, we found the on-site café had plenty of kid-friendly options, which made lunch easy.
6. Trail Dust Town
Trail Dust Town was another highlight of our Tucson trip with kids. This historic marketplace is packed with character, offering a charming mix of authentic stores, restaurants, and a small amusement park.
My kids had an absolute blast exploring some of our favorite shops, especially the Chocolate Depot, the Magic Shop, and Toys-N-Tiques. Each one felt like a new adventure.
One of the most memorable experiences was riding the miniature CP Huntington train in Old Tucson Studios. The train took us on a fun loop around the town, and it was a huge hit with the whole family. The amusement park has plenty to offer, too, including a Ferris wheel, carousel, and live events that kept both the kids and us entertained for hours.
Trail Dust Town offers a wonderful blend of nostalgia and family fun, and I highly recommend it for anyone visiting Tucson with children.
7. Tucson Botanical Gardens
Our visit to the Tucson Botanical Gardens was truly special. Located on the historic Porter property, the gardens are so beautiful that I can see why they’re recognized as one of the Top 10 North American Gardens worth traveling for. As soon as we entered, we were surrounded by lush greenery and a stunning variety of plants and flowers.
The kids were absolutely fascinated by the tropical butterfly exhibits, where we watched butterflies fluttering among blooming plants. One of the highlights for our family was exploring the Children’s Garden. Here, my kids learned about the lifecycle of plants through hands-on displays and interactive activities.
Before we left, we browsed the gift shop, which is full of unique specialty items. I couldn’t resist picking up a few souvenirs for our family and friends. If you’re looking for a peaceful and inspiring outing in Tucson with your kids, the Botanical Gardens are not to be missed.
8. PIMA Air and Space Museum
If your family is at all interested in airplanes or space, this museum is a must-visit. One of our favorite parts was seeing some truly historic aircraft up close, like John F. Kennedy’s presidential plane, the Bumblebee (designed to be the world’s smallest plane), and a replica of the Wright Brothers’ flyer.
The museum is massive, spread over 80 acres and featuring six air-conditioned hangars, so there’s plenty to explore.
We especially enjoyed taking the tram tour around the museum. It was a fun and easy way for the kids to see all the aircraft without getting too tired. The PIMA Air and Space Museum offers a fantastic and educational adventure for the whole family!
9. Mount Lemmon
As a family that loves the outdoors, we made a day trip to Mount Lemmon, and it was one of the highlights of our Tucson vacation. The drive alone is worth it! The scenic route north from the city center takes about an hour, and we were amazed by the changing landscapes along the way.
Once we arrived, there was no shortage of things to do. We spent the day hiking, picnicking, and spotting birds. My kids especially enjoyed exploring the forested trails and skipping rocks in the streams. If you visit in winter, you can even go skiing or sledding, which makes Mount Lemmon a year-round destination!
We made sure to stop at some of the lookout points to take in the panoramic views and even caught a sunset, which was absolutely breathtaking.
The Sky Ride at Mount Lemmon Ski Valley was another favorite—it runs all year and gave us unforgettable views over the alpine forests and rolling hills below.
10. White Stallion Ranch
One of our most memorable experiences in Tucson was staying at the White Stallion Ranch. Nestled in the unspoiled desert, this award-winning dude ranch offers an adventure that my kids still talk about! From the moment we arrived, there was a sense of excitement in the air. There’s just so much for families to do here.
My kids loved the horse riding, and even tried their hand at archery and e-biking. When we needed a break from the sun, we spent time splashing in the outdoor pool or playing in the games room and on the playground. The ranch is surrounded by beautiful trails, perfect for nature walks and hikes that let us really connect with the peaceful desert scenery away from the city’s hustle.
Our family suite was spacious and comfortable, with authentic Western decor and all the amenities we needed for a relaxing stay. If you’re looking for a unique, action-packed staycation in Tucson, I can’t recommend the White Stallion Ranch enough. It truly was an epic adventure for the whole family!
11. Biosphere 2
Our visit to Biosphere 2 was a fascinating experience, especially for my older child. This incredible facility was designed to replicate different ecosystems found on Earth. There’s a rainforest, a desert, an ocean complete with coral reefs, and even a marshland, all inside one massive structure. It’s known as the world’s largest earth science laboratory, and walking through it felt like stepping into a science fiction story!
I’d recommend Biosphere 2 for families with older kids (around 12 and up), since much of the experience is educational and geared toward those who enjoy learning about science and the environment. My younger child found it less engaging, but my older one was completely absorbed by the guided tour and the chance to see these different habitats up close.
A tip from our visit: only a limited number of tours are offered each day, so be sure to book your tickets in advance if you want to visit Biosphere 2 during your Tucson trip.
