Looking for romantic getaways from San Diego? Here are my top picks of nearby destinations that are perfect for a blissful break with your loved one.

Between the daily hustle and socializing, it can be challenging to keep the romance alive in modern relationships. As much as I love living in the city, sometimes it can start to feel a little claustrophobic, and there is nothing better than taking weekend getaways from San Diego for much-needed rest and refreshment.

While San Diego itself is a beautiful city, there are even more charming destinations just a short drive away. Places you’ll love exploring with your partner, hand in hand.

Whether you dream of a relaxing holiday at the beach, want to treat your partner to a day at gorgeous wineries, or simply wish to lounge together while soaking up breathtaking views of nature, you’ll find a getaway that’s perfect for both of you.

Here are the most romantic getaways from San Diego that are truly worthy of your next escape.

The Best Romantic Getaways from San Diego

1. Coronado Island

Coronado Island
Coronado Island

Located just a fifteen-minute drive from San Diego, I find Coronado Island to be a romantic beach escape with a laid-back atmosphere. Some of my favorite things to do on Coronado Island as a couple include renting a tandem bike to ride down The Strand together, browsing the boutiques along Orange Avenue, or enjoying a delicious dinner date at The Henry.

I recommend ending the night with gelato from Bottega Italiana, conveniently located across the street from The Henry.

For a truly memorable romantic stay, I suggest booking a room at the Hotel del Coronado. This iconic beachfront hotel, built in 1888, has hosted dozens of celebrities and political figures over the past century.

Even if you don’t stay at the Hotel del Coronado, don’t miss the chance to stroll through the hotel’s historic lobby and beautiful garden courtyard.

Distance from San Diego: 8 km

How to Get to Coronado Island: Drive across the Coronado Island Bridge or take the Coronado Ferry from San Diego.

Best Time to Visit: March – November

2. Catalina Island

Catalina Island
Catalina Island

The charming town of Avalon on Catalina Island is one of my favorite romantic getaways from San Diego, nestled 22 miles off the coast of mainland California. This beautiful island town offers so many incredible ways to spend a romantic day, night, or weekend away with your partner.

I love the magical resorts with ocean views, just steps from the water, where you can wake up to breathtaking views every morning.

You can start your mornings (or afternoons) at the Descanso Beach Club, sipping on cocktails and taking breaks to cool off in the chilly turquoise water. Swimming alongside the bright orange Garibaldi fish is always a highlight, or you can also rent a kayak for a little adventure.

For an unforgettable meal with a panoramic view, I recommend hiking up to Mt. Ada, one of the highest points in town. Along the way, I always make a point to stop at the viewpoint and relax on the bench under the tree. It’s the perfect spot to soak in a romantic moment together.

For nature lovers, Wrigley’s Botanic Garden is just a short walk from town and offers gorgeous flora, fauna, and even more stunning vistas.

If you’re up for a little more adventure, I highly recommend exploring the less-traveled back side of the island. Here, you might spot the island’s unique native fox species, about the size of a house cat, or see the bison left behind from a Hollywood movie shoot.

The wild vistas on this side of Catalina will have you questioning whether you’re still in the U.S. or have been transported to a faraway paradise!

Distance from San Diego: 65 miles to Dana Point where you get on the Catalina Express ferry for 9:30 am departure which is another 90 minute journey to Avalon.

How to Get There: Get to the Catalina Express ferry terminal at 34675 Golden Lantern. There are daily ferries at 9:30 and 11:30 am. These ferries are 90 minutes long. If you’re doing a day trip from San Diego it is recommended to book your tickets in advance and secure a 9:30 am departure ferry so you can return on the 2:45 pm or 5:00 pm departure ferry from Avalon. Staying overnight is the best though.

Best Time To Visit: All year long! Expect that the summer months are going to be the most in demand and popular times to visit, this will require advance booking on ferry tickets. Going off season or shoulder season gives more flexibility and is often less crowded.

3. Temecula

Temecula – Romantic Getaways From San Diego

Temecula is my go-to romantic getaway from San Diego because there are so many fun things to do with your partner. I love that you can make your trip as adventurous or as relaxing as you like.

Temecula is most famous for its wineries, so if you’re a wine lover like me, this trip is a must. I’ve spent entire days hopping from winery to winery. My favorites are Miramonte Winery, Robert Renzoni Winery, and Wilson Creek Winery.

For a unique experience, I recommend going horseback riding through a vineyard. If you want to get some exercise after all that wine tasting, there are plenty of hiking trails to explore.

I usually head to Harvest-On Lake Loop for an easy stroll, or Vail Lake Loop when I’m up for a bit more of a challenge.

If relaxing is more your style, you’ll love the many spas in the area. One of my top picks is The Grapeseed Spa at South Coast Winery.

For a truly unforgettable experience, you can even splurge on a hot air balloon ride over the vineyards. It’s definitely a bit of a splurge, but what could be more romantic?

Temecula really is a fantastic weekend getaway from San Diego, no matter your idea of the perfect escape.

Distance From San Diego: 1.5 hours/106.5 km

How To Get There: Car is the best though you could take a Greyhound Bus or Uber.

Best Time To Visit: March – May brings the best weather but you will find more festivals/entertainment in the months June till October.

4. Valle de Guadalupe

Valle de Guadalupe
Valle de Guadalupe

Valle de Guadalupe, or Valle (pronounced vay-yay) as I like to call it, is truly one of the most unique places I’ve visited in Mexico. Known as the Napa Valley of Mexico, this up-and-coming wine region and foodie haven in Baja California is quickly becoming my favorite romantic trip south of the border.

If you’re new to wine, I recommend starting at Santo Tomas to learn the basics of winemaking while soaking in the views from their tasting room. For one of the most memorable Valle experiences, don’t miss AlXimia. It’s a winery that looks like a spaceship and is as fun to visit as it is to taste their wines.

When I want a romantic sunset dinner, nothing compares to the panoramic views at Bar Bura, perched high on a hill overlooking the Pacific Ocean. If you’re planning to stay overnight, you can opt for glamping at Cuatro Cuatros, where Bar Bura is located. It’s the perfect way to end a magical day in Valle.

Distance From San Diego: Valle de Guadalupe is located just two hours/135km from San Diego via either the Tijuana or Tecate border crossings.

How To Get There: You can drive your car or join a tour, which is a great option because then you won’t have to worry about driving after wine tasting. Either way you get to Valle, the landscape along Mexico’s Route 3 as you drive in is very beautiful. When you arrive, there are about 120 vineyards and gourmet dining options on the Valle Wine Trail.

Best Time To Visit: The best time to visit Valle is in late-August to early-October, during the grape harvest season. If you’re really lucky, you might even see grapes being sorted and processed.

5. Palm Springs

Palm Springs
Palm Springs – Romantic Getaways From San Diego

Palm Springs is my ideal romantic getaway from San Diego, especially between October and April. While Palm Springs is well-known for its golf courses, pools, and excellent cuisine (all of which I love, by the way), there’s so much more to discover as a couple.

The Greater Palm Springs area also includes gems like La Quinta, Coachella, and Indian Wells. It’s amazing to me how this region remains a lush oasis in the California desert, thanks to the massive underground aquifer.

Some of my favorite things to do with my partner include riding the Palm Springs Aerial Tram. Just remember it’s about 30º cooler at the top! I also enjoy visiting the vibrant Palm Springs Art Museum, hiking in the Agua Caliente Indian Canyons, and exploring the San Andreas earthquake faults on a Desert Adventure Red Jeep Tour.

Of course, you can always relax by a sparkling pool or enjoy some private romance in your inn suite, get pampered with spa treatments, and share a romantic dinner at one of the many excellent restaurants. The convenient trolley along Palm Canyon and Indian Canyon roads makes it easy to explore without a car.

If you want to plan around special events, I recommend Modernism Week in February, the Walk of the Inns in December, the Palm Springs Film Festival in January, or the Palm Springs Indian Festival in February. Honestly, though, any month is a great time for a romantic escape to Palm Springs.

Distance from San Diego: 2 hours 20 minutes, 224 km

How To Get There: Car is most convenient but Greyhound bus operates between San Diego and Desert Hot Springs.

Best Time To Visit: people visit Palm Springs all year but winter through Spring Break is most popular.

6. Solvang

Solvang
Solvang

This charming Danish town is full of great wineries, lovely hotels, and boutique shops that make a quick weekend escape more than worth it. I love starting my visit by admiring the distinctive architecture and scenery in the town known as “Little Denmark in America.” Spotting windmills, browsing cute little shops, and seeing the replica of the Little Mermaid statue always make me smile.

I can never resist picking up a fresh Danish pastry from one of the local bakeries before heading out to try some of the best wineries in Solvang and the Santa Ynez Valley.

Some of my favorites are the Wayward Son Pinot Noir from Carhartt Vineyard, the Consilience La Presa Petite Syrah from Sanger Family of Wines, and the Grenache Rosé from Sunstone Vineyards & Winery.

For the ultimate relaxation, I recommend booking a couples massage at the Enchanté Cottage Spa before enjoying a cozy dinner at Mad & Vin.

Some other great things I like to do in Solvang include hiking up to Nojoqui Falls, exploring the Jule Hus Christmas store, and visiting museums like the Hans Christian Andersen Museum and the Solvang Vintage Motorcycle Museum.

Solvang is that charming little Danish town in SoCal I always want to return to for a romantic weekend getaway.

Distance From San Diego: Located in Santa Barbara County, it is around 420 km from San Diego.

How To Get There: After a 4.5 hour drive from San Diego, if you are lucky and don’t hit traffic, this quaint little town has all you need for a relaxing and romantic trip.

Best Time To Visit: Solvang is lovely pretty much year-round. But it is charming in the autumn months (September till November) when the leaves change as well as around the holidays for the Christmas decorations around the town.

7. Big Bear

Big Bear
Big Bear

The snow-covered mountain peaks, fresh air, and crisp, clean winter weather are just a few of the things I love about Big Bear as a romantic holiday destination. The slopes are perfect for beginners and experts with many different levels of difficulty. You can also get a ski or snowboard lesson to improve your skills in no time.

There’s plenty more fun to be had outside the mountains too, from winter activities like ice skating on Bear Mountain Lake all year round to boating and fishing during the warmer months. There are a number of accommodations available in Big Bear from ski lodges that offer suites with fireplaces to quaint summer cabins right by the lake. You will want to bring your own skis or rent some at one of many local shops along Village Drive.

Distance From San Diego: Big Bear is just 145 miles from San Diego.

How To Get There: It’s a quick three-hour drive from San Diego. Most people travel by car to get there but you can also take a nice relaxing train ride in approximately 7 traffic-free hours.

Best Time To Visit: From January to March when the snow is plentiful and piles high on Sugarloaf Mountain.

Where To Stay In Big Bear: Chateau Big Bear Boutique Hotel
